BRONX, NY – Despite a 2-for-2 night and three stolen bases from junior
Mike Umphlett (North Stonington, Conn.), the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team lost a non-conference game to Baruch College on Thursday night, 10-3. The loss was just the third of the season for the Blue Knights who dropped to 15-3 overall. The Bearcats improved to 9-5.
Baruch sophomore Kellin Bliss (Catskill, N.Y.) pitched seven strong innings, limiting the Mount to just eight hits and three runs. Bliss struck out eight to earn his third win of the season.
The Blue Knights opened the scoring in the first inning as Umphlett walked, stole second, stole third, and then came home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Louis Peisel (Brewster, N.Y.). The lead would be short-lived, however, as Baruch responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Back-to-back doubles from senior Jorge Rosado (Bronx, N.Y.) and junior Arturo Ledesma (Yonkers, N.Y.) led to a pair of runs and an RBI single from freshman Marcos Mejia (Miami, Fla.) made the score 3-1.
Mount Saint Mary tied the game in the top of the second on a two-run double from senior
Brian Visconti (Newburgh, N.Y.). Freshmen
John Conroy (Middletown, N.Y.) and
Zach Shaw (Palisades Park, N.J.) singled earlier in the inning and came around to score on the Visconti double.
Baruch took the lead for good in the bottom of the second when freshman Aldo Altamirano (Flushing, N.Y.) led off the inning with a triple and then scored on an infield groundout. The Bearcats extended their lead in the fifth with two more runs and then put the game away with four runs in the eighth.
For the Mount, Umphlett and Conroy each finished with two hits. The Blue Knights stranded nine runners on the base paths during the game. Sophomore Matthew Paci (Florida, N.Y.) allowed six runs in five innings and took the loss.
Ledesma finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs for Baruch. Senior Joseph Valentin (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded three hits for the Bearcats and closed the door on the Blue Knights with two scoreless innings in relief. He allowed just one hit and struck out one.
Up next for the Mount is a Skyline Conference double-header with St. Joseph's College of Long Island on Saturday, April 4. The games (weather-permitting) are scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start in Newburgh.
