NEWBURGH, NY – A two-run double by senior
Matthew Germann (Islip, N.Y.) in the eighth inning scored the eventual game-winning run as the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team earned a 10-7 non-conference victory over John Jay. The Blue Knights improved to 23-8 on the season while the Bloodhounds dropped to 8-23.

Dan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single. Freshman
John Conroy (Middletown, N.Y.) worked a walk and a sacrifice bunt by junior
Rich DeRosa (Valley Stream, N.Y.) made it runners at second and third. Freshman
Max Tecce (Glen Cove, N.Y.) walked to load the bases and then junior
Mike Umphlett (North Stonington, Conn.) and senior
Brian Visconti (Newburgh, N.Y.) drew run-scoring walks. Germann delivered the big blow of the inning with the two run double and then sophomore
Louis Peisel (Brewster, N.Y.) came through with a sac fly that made it 10-7.
The Blue Knights tied the game in the seventh inning with a pair of runs to make it 5-5. Umphlett led off with a double, Visconti walked, and then both scored on consecutive RBI groundouts by Germann and Peisel.
Junior
Greg Diamond (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) worked seven strong innings and limited the Bloodhounds to just two more runs after a shaky first inning in which he allowed three. Freshman
Carl Henchey (Coxsackie, N.Y.) induced an inning-ending double play in the eighth inning and became the winning pitcher when the Blue Knights tallied five in the bottom half of the frame. Junior
Chris Gage (Saugerties, N.Y.) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
The Blue Knights recorded just five hits in the game, yet still managed to score ten runs. Umphlett was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Germann was 1-for-5 with four RBIs. Visconti had just one official at-bat, but still scored three runs and had an RBI.
Up next for the Mount is a road trip to SUNY Oneonta. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start on Friday, April 24.
