Senzamici Shutout Leads Mount to Split With Purchase

NEWBURGH, NY – Freshman Matt Senzamici (West Babylon, N.Y.) pitched a seven-inning, four-hit shutout as the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team won the second game of a Skyline Conference double-header with Purchase College, 3-0. The Panthers won the first game, 12-7.

Senzamici struck out four in the seven innings and benefited from some timely defense. With runners on second and third in the first inning, senior Matthew Germann (Islip, N.Y.) ate up a groundball at third base and threw home for a tag at the plate and the second out of the inning. Still with two runners on, junior Mike Umphlett (North Stonington, Conn.) made a diving grab in center field to get the Blue Knights out of the inning. In the third inning, again with runners on second and third, freshman Max Tecce (Glen Cove, N.Y.) duplicated Germann's play from the shortstop position.

Germann also had a nice game at the plate, driving in two of the runs for the Mount. His single back through the box in the first inning scored senior Brian Visconti (Newburgh, N.Y.) from second base and his sacrifice fly in the fourth inning scored Tecce. Sophomore Louis Peisel (Brewster, N.Y.) drove home the only other run for the Blue Knights with a single in the third inning.

In game one, the Panthers jumped all over Mount senior starting pitcher Michael Redmond (Stone Ridge, N.Y.). Purchase sent nine batters to the plate in the first inning and took an early five-run lead. Senior Anthony Dowalo (Hicksville, N.Y.) drove home a pair of runs with a single and junior Dominick Simone (Shirley, N.Y.) laced a two-run triple later in the inning.

Purchase got another run in the third, but it was a two-run double by junior George Kennedy (Nyack, N.Y.) in the fourth that finally knocked out Redmond. They led 8-1 at the time.

The Blue Knights responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fourth, but wouldn't get any closer. The Panthers got one in the fifth and three more in the sixth and cruised to a 12-7 victory.

Umphlett led the Mount in game one with a 4-for-5 performance. He scored a run and recorded three RBIs. Visconti, Germann, and Tecce each had a pair of hits for the Blue Knights who recorded sixteen hits in the contest.

Kennedy finished 2-for-5 with a run and 4 RBIs to lead the Panthers. Junior Jared Issacson (Port Washington, N.Y.) was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.

Mount Saint Mary will return to action on Sunday, April 19 as they host the College of Mount Saint Vincent in a Skyline double-header. The first pitch is scheduled for noon at Delano-Hitch Stadium in Newburgh.
