Blue Knights Drop Albertus Magnus

NEWBURGH, NY – Fending off the cold weather and a late-inning charge, the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team defeated Albertus Magnus College by a score of 10-7 on Tuesday night in non-conference action. The Blue Knights improved to 13-1 overall while the Falcons fell to 0-8.

After a scoreless first inning, the Mount hung four runs on the board in the bottom of the second, doing all of the damage with two outs. Sophomore Billy Casey (Marlboro, N.Y.) brought the two-out rally to life with a single through the right side and then senior Jim Marsh (Maybrook, N.Y.) drew a walk. Freshman Max Tecce (Glen Cove, N.Y.) singled through the left side to load the bases and turned the lineup back to the top. Junior Mike Umphlett (North Stonington, Conn.) drove a double down the left field line to clear the bases and would score later in the inning on an error by Albertus Magnus.

The Falcons manufactured a run in the top of the third when senior Chris Noske (South Windsor, N.Y.) walked, stole second, and then scored on a single from sophomore Kyle Calechman (North Haven, Conn.).

Freshman Brian McNoble (Lynbrook, N.Y.) led off the third with a single and scored all the way from first when freshman Dan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.) drilled a triple over the right-fielder's head. McCrea scored to make it 6-1 when Casey singled back through the box.

After the Falcons scratched out a run in the fourth and in the sixth, the Blue Knights got another big hit from McNoble. With the bases loaded, McNoble ripped a triple to score Umphlett, senior Brian Visconti (Newburgh, N.Y.), and sophomore Louis Peisel (Brewster, N.Y.). McNoble scored on a passed ball to make the score 10-3 in favor of the Mount.

Freshman Matt Senzamici (West Babylon, N.Y.) pitched seven innings to pick up the first collegiate win of his career. He allowed eight hits and three runs while striking out four. He induced double-play groundballs in the second and third innings.

Sophomore Justin Murphy (Wallkill, N.Y.) pitched the eighth inning and junior Greg Diamond (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) worked the ninth to close out the 10-7 victory. With two runs already in and runners on first and second in the ninth, Diamond struck out the final batter of the game to preserve the win.

McNoble finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Umphlett was 1-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Casey wound up 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI.

Up next for the Blue Knights is a home date with Vassar College on Wednesday, March 25. The game will be a rematch of last week's 18-17 slugfest in Poughkeepsie. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
