NEWBURGH, NY – Mount Saint Mary College junior
Chris Kingly (Washingtonville, N.Y.) led all scorers with 21 points, but St. Joseph's College still prevailed, 89-73, in Skyline Conference action Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles improved to 11-2 overall and kept pace with the leaders in the conference at 6-1. The Blue Knights dropped to 2-10 overall and to 1-4 in Skyline play.
With the score tied (15-15) near the eleven minute mark, Kingly nailed a three-pointer on a feed from sophomore
Matt Weinberger (Washingtonville, N.Y.) to give the Blue Knights an 18-15 advantage. It would be the last team the Mount would lead during the game. St. Joseph's answered with a 9-0 run, capped by a breakaway lay-up from senior David Acree (Brentwood, N.Y.), to take a six point lead. The Golden Eagles carried a 41-37 lead into the half.
Out of the half, senior
Chris Harrison (Baldwin, N.Y.) fought hard for an offensive rebound and made a tough layup to cut the deficit to two, but the Golden Eagles answered quickly with a jumper by Acree. Then, leading by three (48-45), St. Joseph's ripped off a seven point run and a three-pointer from freshman Chris Jimenez (Huntington Station, N.Y.) forced the Blue Knights to take a time-out.
Still leading by ten, St. Joseph's senior Alvin Bray (Coram, N.Y.) put an exclamation mark on the second half with a monstrous baseline dunk. He was fouled on the play and drained the free throw for a devastating three-point play. After a three-pointer by Kingly at the other end, Bray made an acrobatic layup in the lane to extend the lead back to twelve. The Mount answered again, this time with a layup by Harrison, but this time it was Acree who hit a incredibly difficult layup in heavy traffic.
The Blue Knights would pull back to within nine at the 8:11 mark when senior
Alex Kuchar (Rutherford, N.J.) drained a three-pointer after an offensive rebound by freshman
Carlos Valdez (Slate Hill, N.Y.). The Golden Eagles, however, responded with back-to-back three-pointers, putting the game out of reach.
Kingly connected five times from three-point range and finished with 21 points and 3 assists. Harrison tallied 16 points and 12 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Kuchar would up with 18 points, while Valdez had another big game on the glass, totaling 18 rebounds to go along with his 10 points.
Senior J.J. Walsh (Brentwood, N.Y.) was the star for the Golden Eagles, racking up an impressive 18 points and 17 rebounds. Acree had 18 points while Bray had 10. As a team, St. Joseph's shot a torrid 54.7-percent from the field.
The Blue Knights will have several days off before heading to Old Westbury to continue their conference schedule. The game on Saturday, January 17 is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
