Mount Saint Vincent Comeback Ends Mount’s Season

Farmingdale, NY – Despite trailing by eight runs in the early going and by three runs in the late innings, the College of Mount Saint Vincent baseball team rallied to defeat Mount Saint Mary College, 14-12, in the loser's bracket of the Skyline Conference tournament on Saturday. Mount Saint Mary finishes the season with an overall record of 13-25.

Carrying an 11-8 lead into the eighth innings, the Blue Knights allowed five runs in the frame and allowed Mount Saint Vincent to take their first lead of the contest. After the lead-off man was hit by a pitch, the Dolphins strung together five hits and a pair of sacrifice flies to take the lead. The crucial play of the inning came on a sinking line drive to right-center field. Mount Saint Mary sophomore Mike Umphlett (North Stonington, Conn.) seemed to have caught the ball on the fly and then fired to first base for an attempt at a double play. The line drive was ruled to have hit the turf, however, and instead of an inning-ending double play, there were now runners at first and second with only one out. The next three batters for Mount Saint Vincent drove in runs and gave the Dolphins a 13-11 cushion.

The Blue Knights staked themselves to an early lead with seven runs in the second inning. Six singles, a walk, and two Mount Saint Vincent errors allowed the seven runs to score. Junior Brian Visconti (Newburgh, N.Y.) drove home a pair of runs with a single to left-center and then senior Chris Schacca (Franklin Square, N.Y.) knocked home two runs with a single to the left side. Senior Anthony Forgione (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and junior Matthew Germann (Islip, N.Y.) also collected RBIs in the inning.

Mount Saint Mary tacked on another run in both the third and fourth innings and led 9-2 at the end of four. The Dolphins scored five runs in the fifth and then one more in the sixth to cut the deficit to just one run. Forgione and Germann each knocked in another run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Blue Knights an 11-8 lead.

Forgione finished 4-for-6 with 3 RBIs and a run scored. Senior B.J. Masopust (Wallkill, N.Y.) was 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Schacca, Visconti, Germann, and sophomore Greg Diamond (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) each had two hits for the Blue Knights.

Mount Saint Vincent advanced to take on St. Joseph's College in the loser's bracket final. The winner advanced to play Farmingdale State College in the championship game(s).
