Newburgh, N.Y. - Behind a four-run last inning rally, the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team took the first game of today's doubleheader against SUNY IT, 6-5. The Blue Knights dropped the second game, 9-3, as the Wildcats jumped on the board early with five runs in the first inning. Mount Saint Mary is now 4-11 overall while SUNY IT is 7-10.
Trailing 5-2 headed into the last inning, sophomore Greg Diamond (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) led off the inning with a walk. Senior Brian Visconti (Newburgh, N.Y.) grounded out to second to move up the runner and then junior Matthew Germann (Islip, N.Y.) singled to right field, moving the runner to third. Senior Chris Schacca (Franklin Square, N.Y.) walked to load the bases and then the Blue Knights got their first run of the inning on a wild pitch. Now with runners on second and third, senior Anthony Forgione (Franklin Square, N.Y.) singled, driving in both runs and tying the game at five. Forgione moved to second on a groundout by junior Matthew Berger (Cochecton, N.Y.) and then scored on a single by senior B.J. Masopust (Wallkill, N.Y.).
Junior Kyle Smith (Franklin Square, N.Y.) pitched a scoreless bottom of the inning to preserve the victory for the Blue Knights. Smith didn't allow a hit over the last two and two-thirds innings and picked up his second win of the year.
In the second game, the Wildcats jumped out to a five run lead in the first inning. Following lead-off double by Jay Thomas, Vinny Brescia, Ty Brodt, and Ben Bushey all singled. Jacob Squillace doubled and the Wildcats had their third run without recording an out.
Ethan Marr went the whole way for SUNY IT, allowing just seven hits and one earned run. He struck out five Blue Knights.
For the Mount in game two, Berger was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Visconti was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Up next for the Blue Knights is a date with Farmingdale State College. Mount Saint Mary hosts Farmingdale in a double-header on Monday, April 7 beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Delano-Hitch Stadium in Newburgh.
