Newburgh, N.Y. - Boosted by a six-run sixth inning, the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team defeated Baruch College, 13-4, in non-conference action Thursday night in Newburgh. The Blue Knights improved to 11-16 overall while the Bearcats dropped to 3-19.
To start the evening, Mount Saint Mary senior Brian Visconti (Newburgh, N.Y.) put the Blue Knights on the board with a two-run single to center in the second inning. Baruch answered immediately with one in the top of the third as sophomore David Chestnut (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drove a pitch back through the box for an RBI single.
The Bearcats captured their first lead in the top of the fifth. Senior Greg Polius (Brooklyn, N.Y.) roped a triple down the right-field line, scoring freshman Benjamin Riofrio (Queens, N.Y.) who had reached with a walk. Chestnut, the next batter, drove in his second run of the game with an RBI groundout to make the score 3-2.
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Blue Knights hung a three on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the fifth. After a Visconti double to left-center and an infield single by senior Chris Schacca (Franklin Square, N.Y.), senior Anthony Forgione (Franklin Square, N.Y.) ripped a triple to the wall in left-center for a pair of RBIs. Forgione scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Matthew Germann (Islip, N.Y.) to make it 5-3.
The Bearcats scratched out another run in the top of the sixth, but the Blue Knights blew the game open with a six-pack in the bottom half of the inning. Mount Saint Mary had seven hits in the inning, two of them doubles. Visconti, sophomore Mike Umphlett (North Stonington, Conn.), Schacca, and Germann all picked up an RBI in the frame and two more runs scored by way of a balk and a wild pitch.
Senior Mike Lehmann (Mahwah, N.J.) collected the win for the Mount while junior Joseph Valentin (Bronx, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss for Baruch.
Visconti finished 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs. Schacca was 3-for-4, raising his team-high batting average to .489, and also tallied 2 runs scored and an RBI. Forgione collected 3 hits in 5 at-bats while driving in a pair and scoring two more.
Up next for Mount Saint Mary is an all-important Skyline Conference showdown with St. Joseph's College, who currently sit atop the league standings. The Golden Eagles will host the Blue Knights in a double-header on Saturday that is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
