Newburgh, N.Y. - Scoring all five of their runs with two outs, the College of Staten Island baseball team defeated Mount Saint Mary College, 5-4, in non-conference action tonight at Delano-Hitch Stadium in Newburgh. Junior
Anthony Piccirillo (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled in the winning run in the eighth inning and sophomore
Andrew Baio (Staten Island, N.Y.) closed out the Blue Knights, recording the final six outs of the ball game. The Dolphins improved to 11-12 overall while the Blue Knights drop to 10-16.
The Blue Knights got on the board first with two runs in the second inning. Senior Anthony Forgione (Franklin Square, N.Y.) singled to left field to start off the inning and junior Matthew Germann (Islip, N.Y.) followed with a single to center. Freshman Louis Peisel (Brewster, N.Y.) moved up the runners with a sacrifice and then the first of the Mount's runs scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore Greg Diamond (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) singled to center to drive in Germann and make the score 2-0.
Staten Island countered to take the lead in the fourth, scoring three runs all with two outs. Sophomore Devin DiCasoli (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled with one out and then moved to second on a groundball to first. With two outs, junior Joel Pratts (Brooklyn, N.Y.) lifted a flyball to right where it was misplayed, allowing Dicasoli to score and Pratts to advance to second. Sophomore Pat Gale (Staten Island, N.Y.) made the Blue Knights pay for the mistake, launching a two-run homer to right to make the score 3-2.
Mount Saint Mary tied the game in the sixth. Senior Brian Visconti (Newburgh, N.Y.) drove in the run with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring senior B.J. Masopust (Wallkill, N.Y.) who had singled earlier in the inning. Diamond moved Masopust to third with a double to right-center field.
The Dolphins retook the lead in the seventh with a two-out single by DiCasoli. Sophomore Thomas DeWaters (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored on the play after doubling to right-center.
The Blue Knights responded in the bottom half of the seventh to tie the game at four. Senior Chris Schacca (Franklin Square, N.Y.) singled to lead off the inning and came around to score on a two-out double by Peisel.
In the eighth, Staten Island pushed across what would turn out to be the winning run. After a double play, pinch-hitting freshman Vin Savino (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled through the left side and moved from first to third on a single by freshman pinch-hitter Mark Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y.). Piccirillo grounded a slow roller to third base and beat out the play at first, allowing Savino to score from third.
Sophomore Daniel Gonzalez (Staten Island, N.Y.) went seven innings and nabbed the win for the Dolphins. Baio picked up the save. Piccirillo, DeWaters, DiCasoli, and Gale each recorded two hits for Staten Island.
Junior Kyle Smith (Valley Stream, N.Y.) pitched seven strong innings for the Mount, allowing just seven hits while striking out three. Senior Dave Babcock (Otisville, N.Y.) picked up the loss. Forgione and Schacca each finished 3-for-5 at the plate with a run scored. Masopust was 2-for-2 with a run scored and Diamond was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Up next for Mount Saint Mary is another non-conference game, this time against Baruch. The Blue Knights host the Bearcats on Thursday beginning at 5:00 p.m.
