Newburgh, N.Y. - Behind strong efforts from senior catcher
Chris Schacca (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and freshman catcher
Louis Peisel (Brewster, N.Y.), the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team took both ends of a double-header from Yeshiva University in convincing fashion. The Blue Knights rapped 14 hits in game one on their way to a 14-0 victory and then pounded 17 more hits in game two during a 22-3 rout. MSMC moved to 10-15 overall and to 7-3 in the Skyline Conference. The Maccabees remain winless at 0-25 and 0-16 in conference play.
Schacca was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in the first game, and after moving to the designated hitter position for the second game, the senior was 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs and another run scored. Peisel took over for Schacca behind the plate in game two and proceeded to have the best game of his young collegiate career. The freshman was 4-for-5 with 4 RBIs and a pair of runs scored. He doubled in the fourth inning and then again in the fifth, but it was his at-bat in the sixth that put the exclamation point on the afternoon. With runners on second and third, Peisel crushed a home run over the wall in left, the first of his career.
In game one, sophomore Mike Umphlett (North Stonington, Conn.) drove in the first two runs for the Blue Knights, the first with a double and the second with a sacrifice fly. Senior Brian Visconti (Newburgh, N.Y.) reached with a walk and an infield single and scored the first two runs. Umphlett also drove in a pair of runs with a single in the fifth and finished the game 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs, 2 runs, and 2 stolen bases. Visconti finished 2-for-3 with 3 runs, an RBI, and 3 stolen bases.
Also in game one, freshman William Casey (Marlboro, N.Y.) drove in a pair of runs with a double in the third inning. Junior Matthew Berger (Cochecton, N.Y.) also picked up two RBIs with a single in the fifth. Both finished 1-for-3 with a run scored in addition to their runs batted in.
Sophomore pitcher Chris Gage (Saugerties, N.Y.) scattered six hits across seven innings to pick up his first win of the year. Senior Mike Lehmann (Mahwah, N.J.) pitched the last two innings to close out the Maccabees.
The Blue Knights continued to light up the scoreboard in game two, putting together two seven-run innings and one five-run inning. Junior Matthew Germann (Islip, N.Y.) broke the contest wide open in the fourth inning with a three-run triple. After the Macs intentionally walked senior Anthony Forgione (Franklin Square, N.Y.) to load the bases, Germann made them pay with the triple down the left-field line. Earlier in the inning, sophomore Greg Diamond (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) knocked in two runs with a single to right field.
Senior Dave Babcock (Otisville, N.Y.), sophomore Justin Cardenas (Leonia, N.J.), and sophomore Rich DeRosa (Valley Stream, N.Y.) each recorded a hit and two runs scored after entering the game in the fifth inning.
Freshman Matthew Paci (Florida, N.Y.) pitched five innings, striking out eight, to record the victory. Lehmann pitched another scoreless inning and freshman Joe Mugnai (Farmingdale, N.Y.) shut down the Macs with a scoreless seventh.
Mount Saint Mary will play two non-conference games during the week before returning to conference play next weekend. The Blue Knights host Staten Island on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. and Baruch on Thursday at 7:00 p.m., before traveling to St. Joseph's for a Saturday double-header that is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
