Newburgh, N.Y. - On the road at first-place Old Westbury, the Mount Saint Mary College baseball teamed earned a split with the Panthers and kept pace with the top teams in the Skyline Conference. Pitching dominated the day, with each team winning a game with a shutout. Old Westbury's
Robert Whitenack pitched a three-hitter in game one, leading the Panthers to a 2-0 victory. Mount Saint Mary junior
Mike Redmond (Stone Ridge, N.Y.) pitched a five-hitter in game two, helping the Blue Knights to a 9-0 win.
In game one, Whitenack allowed just one runner past second base in his nine innings of work. He struck out eight Blue Knights, while walking just one. He out-dueled Mount Saint Mary junior Frank Snyder (Wallkill, N.Y.), who also pitched a complete game. Snyder allowed just eight hits while walking two and striking out three.
The Panthers scratched out a run in the third, as Kevin Reynolds and John Taglienti led off the inning with back-to-back singles. They moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Ben Farmer, and then Reynolds scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Mazzarese. Old Westbury tacked on another run in the seventh, giving Whitenack more than enough support as he continued to mow down the Blue Knights.
The second game started very much like the first, with neither team scoring in the early innings. The Blue Knights broke through in the fourth as senior Chris Schacca (Franklin Square, N.Y.) tripled to lead off the inning and then came around to score on a single by junior Matthew Germann (Islip, N.Y.).
The big inning for the Mount came in the fifth. With a run already in and the bases loaded, senior Anthony Forgione (Franklin Square, N.Y.) tripled to clear the bases and give the Mount a 5-0 lead. Forgione would make the lead six, scoring on a groundout by Germann.
The Blue Knights picked up another run in the sixth and then two more in the seventh, putting the game well out of reach. Redmond scattered five hits and a walk across the seven innings to pick up the complete game victory. The junior moved his record to 3-2 for the year.
Schacca, Germann, and sophomore Greg Diamond (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) each had a pair of hits for the Blue Knights. Schacca and senior Brian Visconti (Newburgh, N.Y.) each scored two runs. Forgione finished 1-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a run scored.
With the split, the Blue Knights move to 8-15 overall and to 5-3 inside the Skyline Conference. Old Westbury is 9-19 overall and 7-3 in the conference. Each with three losses, both teams joined a logjam at the top of the conference standings with Farmingdale and St. Joseph's. Up next for Mount Saint Mary is Yeshiva University. The Blue Knights will take on the Maccabees in a double-header tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in Newburgh.
