Newburgh, N.Y. - In non-conference action Tuesday evening, the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team dropped an 11-3 decision to Centenary College in Newburgh. The Blue Knights dropped to 3-9 overall while the Cyclones bumped up to 6-11.
Centenary got on the board first, taking advantage of a leadoff walk to sophomore Mark DiMaio (Morris Plains, N.J.). DiMaio stole second and third and then scored on a single by senior Andrew Materia (Jackson, N.J.).
The Blue Knights were quick to answer, as senior Chris Schacca (Franklin Square, N.Y.) drove a 1-0 pitch deep to left field for his second home run of the year.
After two scoreless frames, the Cyclones hung up a crooked number on the scoreboard, tallying six runs in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded, freshman Zach Reynolds (Yorktown, N.Y.) lined a bases-clearing double into the right-center field gap to make the score 4-1. DiMaio drove in Reynolds with a single and then the Cyclones benefited from an error and a balk for two more runs.
A sacrifice fly by senior Brian Visconti (Newburgh, N.Y.) in the bottom of the fourth made the score 7-2, but the Mount stranded runners on second and third, failing to capitalize on an opportunity to get closer. The Blue Knights continued to chip away in the fifth as Schacca roped a double to right-center and then scored on a single by freshman William Casey (Marlboro, N.Y.).
The Cyclones scored one in the sixth and three in the eighth and the bullpen held down the Blue Knights for the final four innings, preserving an 11-3 victory.
Sophomore Matthew Devenny (Middletown, N.J.) picked up the win for Centenary. Junior Scott Francis (Pawcatuck, Conn.) took the loss for the Blue Knights.
Schacca finished 3-for-5 for the Blue Knights with two runs scored and an RBI. With hits in his first three at-bats of the night, Schacca extended his streak of hits in consecutive at-bats to ten. A flyout in his fourth plate appearance ended the streak. Visconti and Casey each finished with two hits and an RBI.
Centenary's DeMaio finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Reynolds was 2-for-5 with three runs and three runs driven in.
Up next for the Blue Knights is SUNY Oneonta. MSMC will host Oneonta on Thursday, April 3 beginning at 5:00 p.m.
