NEWBURGH, NY – The College of Mount Saint Vincent shot better than 56-percent from the field on Saturday afternoon on their way to a 107-88 Skyline Conference victory over Mount Saint Mary College. The Dolphins moved to 4-3 overall and to 2-0 in the conference. The loss was the fifth in a row for the Blue Knights who dropped to 1-5 overall and to 0-2 in the conference.
After falling behind in the opening minutes, Mount Saint Vincent junior Nick DiMaggio (Croton, N.Y.) hit a jumper to make the score 6-5 and the Dolphins would never trail again. DiMaggio had a huge first half, at one point scoring nine consecutive points for the Dolphins, and finished with 17 points in the opening stanza. Chris Kingly (Washingtonville, N.Y.) at the 7:18 mark made the score 27-24 in favor of the visitors. Mount Saint Vincent answered with the next six points and carried a 41-31 advantage into the locker room.
The Dolphins got even hotter in the second half, making fourteen of their first twenty shots to push their advantage to twenty-nine near the ten minute mark. Senior Joe Cooke (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) came alive in the second, connecting on 6-of-8 shots from the field and pouring in 16 second half points. Carlos Valdez (Slate Hill, N.Y.) who also scored 16 points in the half. Valdez electrified the crowd at the five minute mark with an emphatic dunk following a feed from sophomore
Matt Weinberger (Washingtonville, N.Y.).
DiMaggio led all scorers with 27 points and Cooke finished with 21. Junior Eric Lastres (Bayside, N.Y.) racked up 14 points and 9 boards while freshman Randy Battle (Bronx, N.Y.) totaled 18 points and 8 boards.
Senior
Chris Harrison (Baldwin, N.Y.) was the top man for the Blue Knights, finishing with 25 points and 9 rebounds. Valdez was 7-for-7 from the field for 16 points and also collected 8 rebounds. Weinberger had 8 points and 11 assists.
Mount Saint Mary returns to action this week when they travel to Polytechnic University. The game, their last of the first semester, is scheduled for Tuesday, December 9 at 7:00 p.m.
