Espinoza Nets Two in Win Over Staten Island

NEWBURGH, NY – Led by a pair of goals from senior Andy Espinoza (Mount Kisco, N.Y.), the Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team earned a 6-1 non-conference victory over the College of Staten Island on Monday. The Blue Knights have now won five games in a row to improve to 8-7 on the year. The Dolphins fell to 4-13-1.

Espinoza broke up a scoreless game in the 21st minute with a nice header on a cross from senior Francis Amarteifio (Accra, Ghana). Amarteifio crossed the ball from the right side to the far post and Espinoza headed the ball down to the goal line to beat the keeper.

Junior John Como (Wingdale, N.Y.) doubled the lead for the Blue Knights in the 34th minute with a rebound goal. Sophomore Chris Boydston (Monroe, N.Y.) launched an excellent shot from 30 yards that bounced squarely off the crossbar and right to the foot of Como who finished the play.

Espinoza made the lead 3-0, again taking a feed from Amarteifio and finding the net. A diagonal ball from the right side allowed Espinoza to beat the keeper near the top of the box and put the ball into an empty net.

Junior Ian Peo (Levittown, N.Y.), playing in his first game back from injury, tallied the fourth goal of the night for the Blue Knights. Senior Jon Gasiewski (New Milford, Conn.) hit Peo from the left side and he snuck a shot inside the far post.

Senior Brandon Abreu (Staten Island, N.Y.) tallied his first goal of the year in the 84th minute, heading in a cross from junior Paul Zegers (Levittown, N.Y.). Senior Brian Strock (Wallkill, N.Y.) capped the scoring in the 87th minute, lacing a free kick from 25 yards to the top corner. It was his second goal in as many games.

Sophomore Pat McGinnis (Binghamton, N.Y.) made nine saves to collect the win for the Blue Knights. He allowed only a penalty kick goal in the 78th minute.

The Mount heads into the final two games of the Skyline Conference season in a three-way tie for second. They head to Bard (tied for second) on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. start before hosting conference-leading St. Joseph's College on Saturday in the regular season finale.
