Newburgh, New York - With three much-needed Skyline points up for the taking, the Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team took care of business Thursday evening on Kaplan Field, defeating Yeshiva University by a score of 3-0. The Blue Knights controlled play for much of the game and fired 17 shots on goal compared to only 3 for Yeshiva. With the win, MSMC improved to 5-8 overall and 2-4 in the Skyline Conference, good enough for a tie for the fifth position. The Maccabees fell to 0-6 overall with five of their losses coming to conference opponents.
The Blue Knights struck almost immediately, as senior Devin Klotz (Riverton, N.J.) found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Junior Francis Amarteifio (Accra, Ghana) played a beautiful, low cross from the right side and Klotz finished with a header past the keeper.
With the early lead, it looked like it was going to be a good night for the Mount, who has struggled at times this season to find scoring. The chances were there, but goals continued to elude MSMC for the rest of the first half. The Blue Knights fired 27 shots in the opening stanza, hitting the net with eleven, and only scoring the one goal.
In the second half, MSMC tightened up their play a little bit, and finally found their second goal of the night. In the 53rd minute, junior Nick Morse (New Milford, Conn.) picked up a loose ball in the Yeshiva end, dribbled in to the top of the box, and drilled a low shot that scooted past the Yeshiva keeper. With a two goal lead, Morse would tally his third goal of the season in the 69th minute, this time on a feed from freshman Paul Zegers (Levittown, N.Y.), to give the Blue Knights their three goal margin of victory.
Senior Kyle Reiss (Oxford, N.Y.) and sophomore Paul Aries (Nashua, N.H.) combined for three saves to blank the Maccabees. Facing a barrage of shots for the entire game, Yeshiva's sophomore goalkeeper Shua Pransky (Philadelphia, Pa.) was the star of the game for the Macs, finishing with 14 saves.
With a chance to advance further up the Skyline Conference standings, the Blue Knights will host Purchase College this weekend. Mount Saint Mary College and Purchase are currently tied, both with records of 2-4 in league play. The game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 20.
