Rapid Recap
The Mount Saint Mary College Knights kicked off their 2025 season at home against nationally ranked #17 New York University, a team coming off a Sweet 16 run in 2024. With a number of new faces in the starting lineup, including Morgan Tubbs, Kaitlyn Shotter, and Isabella Barone, and under the leadership of head coach Joe Dolan in his first full season at the helm, the Knights entered the matchup looking for a strong start to the year. However, NYU quickly established its dominance. The Violets scored in the first minute and applied intense pressure for the whole of the first half. With 15 shots on goal during the opening 45 minutes, junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Lennane endured an onslaught while starting in goal for the home opener. Despite the constant and well-planned attack from NYU, Lennane remained strong and made a career-high eight saves. The Violets dominated possession for a large portion of the half and had a comfortable 3-0 lead at halftime.
Coming out of the half, the Violets controlled play and kept up their offensive intensity. The Knights showed brief flashes of attacking play and put two shots on goal, but were largely kept at bay by NYU's defense. Meanwhile, the Violets continued to find space in the attacking third, assisted by their high press and quick transitions. NYU added three more goals in the second half, bringing the final score to 6-0. Their well-balanced attack generated 14 more shots, 11 of which were on frame, keeping the pressure on the Knights' defense. Freshman goalkeeper Julianna Ewashko made her collegiate debut and was immediately tested, recording 8 saves in her first appearance. Even though the outcome was not in the Knights' favor, this game was a useful test and a starting point for their development of teamwork and confidence during this new leadership era.
