Top Two Seeds Set To Tussle For Skyline Conference Championship

Knights searching for first crown since 2013

Newburgh, N.Y. – The top two seeds in the 2017 Skyline Conference Men's Soccer Championship will meet on Saturday afternoon for a chance to represent the league in the NCAA Tournament. Mount Saint Mary College, the top seed in the event, will host second seeded St. Joseph's-L.I. at 3:00 p.m. at Kaplan Field with Live Stats available for those who cannot attend the tilt.
 
At A Glance: Mount Saint Mary enters Saturday's final at 11-7-0 and winners of its last three outings, including a 2-0 semifinal win over Old Westbury, in which it is outscoring its opponents 7-0.
 
Junior Joey Dolan (New Paltz, N.Y.) leads the scoring attack for the Mount with 17 goals, a pair of helpers and 36 points. He enters Saturday's contest tops in the Skyline Conference in goals and game winning goals, with seven, and sits in a tie for second in points.
 
Fred Stark, who scored for the third time on the season in Wednesday's semifinal, is second on the team in points with 10 and is tied with Connor Lynch (Clifton Park, N.Y.) for tops on the team in assists with four. Matt Fuge (Avon, Conn.) scored the game winner on Wednesday, his first deciding goal of the year, and enters Saturday's tilt second on the team in goals with four and third in points with nine.
 
In goal, freshman Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) has recorded six shutouts, including the 2-0 win on Wednesday, and enters the weekend with a 0.60 goals against average and an .857 save percentage to go along with 36 stops. His six clean sheets are tops in the conference as is his mark for goals against average.
 
Last Time Out: The Knights blanked Old Westbury in Wednesday's semifinal by a score of 2-0. Fuge scored the eventual game winning goal just 33 seconds after kick-off and Stark added an insurance marker late in the first half. Rapp picked up his sixth shutout of the season with six saves.
 
Scouting St. Joseph's-L.I.: The Golden Eagles come calling with an 8-7-1 overall record after pulling away from the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the semifinal round by a score of 4-0. St. Joseph's got the eventual game winning goal from Rayneri Ruiz, his first of two in the game, in the 33rd minute and scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half to pull in front by three goals.
 
Ruiz leads the Golden Eagles in scoring with a team-high 13 goals, leading to 31 points. Damian Duda paces the team with seven assists and has added five goals for St. Joseph's for 19 points heading into the week. Ruiz is fourth in the conference in points and tied for fourth in goals, while Duda leads the league in helpers.
 
In goal, Stephen Deng has started 12 times and played 1,085:34 of a possible 1,470:53. He holds a 1.82 goals against average and a .711 save percentage, making 54 stops thus far. Deng enters the weekend fifth in the Skyline Conference in save percentage.
 
Championship History: The Knights are in the Skyline Conference Championship final for the third time since 2012 and are searching for their first conference title since winning in 2013. St. Joseph's has won three crowns recently, winning in back-to-back years in 2008 and 2009 and winning again in 2012 when it topped Mount Saint Mary.
 
The two teams have met four times in the conference championship since 2007 with the Golden Eagles winning three times. St. Joseph's won in the semifinal round in 2008, topped the Knights 3-0 in the 2012 championship final and won again in the semifinal round in 2014. The Knights won a 7-1 First Round decision in 2013 on their way to the conference title.
 
What's At Stake: The winner of Saturday's contest will represent the conference in the 2017 NCAA Tournament.
