Men’s Soccer Finishes Perfect Weekend with 3-2 Victory over Buffalo State

Box Score

FREDONIA, N.Y. – After scoring just one goal in the last two games, the Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team (3-0-1) found life on Saturday, coming out on top against Buffalo State College (1-3-0) by a score of 3-2 Saturday afternoon in the final day of the Blue Devil/Clarion Hotel Classic, hosted by Fredonia State University at University Stadium. The Knights finish the tournament with a 2-0 record to take home the Classic championship.

Junior defender Ivan Dorador (Valley Stream, N.Y.) was named the Blue Devil/Clarion Hotel Classic Most Valuable Player after scoring the game-winning goal in both of the Knights' victories over the weekend. Senior forward Matt Garcia (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), senior midfielder Chris Marchese (Cold Spring, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Brett Fucheck (Newburgh, N.Y.) were all named to the All-Tournament team for their strong efforts throughout the weekend.

Dorador came away with the game winner after putting the Knights up 3-1 in the 63rd minute off a free kick cross from Garcia. Garcia had a three-point day on Saturday, scoring his first goal of the season at the 15:25 mark on a penalty kick to put the Knights up, 2-0.

Marchese opened the scoring for the game with a netter in the 10th minute off a feed from sophomore midfielder Mike Zanfardino (Saint James, N.Y.). Garcia's penalty-kick score put the Knights up 2-0, but Buffalo State got one back on Francesco Cardillo's goal at 25:36 to cut the Knight lead in half.

The Knights went up 3-1 on Dorador's second goal of the weekend, but Buffalo State was able to cut the deficit to a single goal once again on Joe Vucic's penalty kick in the 78th minute. Keegan Lezama had a chance to tie the game for the Bengals just 90 seconds later with a shot from inside the 18, but sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Biscone (Garden City, N.Y.) managed to make the stop on the final shot he faced in the game.

Biscone earned his second victory over the year, making nine saves and allowing two goals. Hunter Hein suffered the loss for the Bengals, allowing three goals and stopping five shots.

Buffalo State was the more aggressive team on Saturday, firing off 20 shots to just 10 for the Knights. 11 of those 20 went on target, while the Knights put eight on net. The Knights led with four corner-kick opportunities to three for the Bengals.

After a strong weekend, the Knights will look to stay hot in a road contest against Albertus Magnus College on Tuesday, Sept. 9. The game is set to kick off at 4 p.m.
