Box Score 2 NEWBURGH, N.Y. – 15 up and 15 down went the Lightning as sophomore pitcher
Victoria Goldbach (Middle Village, N.Y.) did not allow a base runner in game one, resulting in a perfect game as the Mount Saint Mary College softball team (18-8) went on to sweep Lehman College (3-15) with scores of 17-0 and 19-0 Tuesday afternoon at the Mount.
Goldbach struck out nine of the 15 batters she faced in the complete five innings without a single blemish on her stat line to pick up her eighth win of the year. This is the first perfect game for the Knights in at least 15 years. The last no-hitter of any kind for the Knights was thrown on April 19, 2013 by
Caitlin Maynes in an 11-0 victory over the College of New Rochelle.
Eight different Knights had hits in game one, and all nine batters scored at least once. Senior second baseman
Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with her eighth home run of the year game-high four RBI and two runs scored, while junior third baseman
Danielle Soto (Miller Place, N.Y.) hit 3-for-4 with a two RBI and two runs. Four more batters picked up multiple hits in the first game.
Goldbach took the mound again to kick off game two, but her perfect streak ended in the top of the first as Kyala Cruz picked up a single after Goldbach struck out the first two batters of the game. She struck out four batters in two innings of work before yielding to sophomore pitcher
Nicole Lomangino (Wantagh, N.Y.), who went on to strike out seven batters and allow just one hit across the final three innings, earning her the win.
Both Soto and freshman catcher
Breanna DePasquale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) went 4-for-4 in game two. DePasquale smacked her second home run of the year, leading to an incredible six-RBI, four-run effort. Soto matched her game one numbers with two RBI and two runs. Sophomore first baseman
Kate Zubicki (Kearny, N.J.) homered not once, but twice in the third inning, eventually finishing 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs scored and a double that she hit in the fourth.
The Knights return to action on Thursday, April 10, when they travel down to Mahwah, N.J. for a non-conference doubleheader at Ramapo College. Game one is set to begin at 3 p.m.
