Box Score 2 NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College softball team (16-8, 8-2 Skyline) split with SUNY College at Old Westbury (6-7, 2-6 Skyline) in a Skyline Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the Mount. The Knights shut out the Panthers in game one, 3-0, but struggled in game two, eventually falling, 12-4.
Sophomore starter
Victoria Goldbach (Middle Village, N.Y.) threw a gem in game one, going the completely seven innings without allowing a run and striking out six batters to earn her sixth win and bounce back nicely from a shaky start on Saturday. She earned the win over Nicole DeCola, who tossed six innings and allowed three runs (zero earned).
The Knights got two of their runs in the bottom of the fourth, both taking place on fielding errors by Old Westbury, which made a total of six errors in game one. The Knights grabbed their third run in the bottom of sixth when freshman first baseman
Michelle Surdan (Acton, Mass.) grounded out to the pitcher, bringing in junior catcher
Stephanie Karcher (Oxford, Conn.) from third.
Despite winning the game, the Knights had just four hits in Sunday's opener. Karcher and junior third baseman
Danielle Soto (Miller Place, N.Y.) each went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Game two got off to a rough start, as the Knights fell behind, 3-0, after the Panthers' first at bat of the game. The Knights got a pair back in the home half of the first when freshman shortstop
Breanna DePasquale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) singled to knock in sophomore center fielder
Sabrina Gordek (Levittown, N.Y.). Soto also scored on the play, advancing when the Panthers attempted to catch DePasquale taking second.
The top of the second improved the Panther lead, as they added another four runs. After the Knights got one back in their next at bat, Old Westbury added two more in the third to go up 9-3. The Knights made it 9-4 after senior right fielder
Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.) picked up an RBI single in the bottom of the third. Old Westbury went on to add three more runs in the final three innings to earn the 12-4 win.
Senior starter
Amanda Barrese (Staten Island, N.Y.) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs (three earned) in one-plus innings. DeCola picked up the win in a relief effort in game two, tossing 4.1 scoreless innings for the Panthers.
Gordek was a bright spot for the Knights in the game two defeat, going 4-for-4 with a run scored. Peel hit 2-for-4, and sophomore first baseman
Kate Zubicki (Kearny, N.J.) scored twice in a 1-for-3 outing.
Center fielder Jennifer Jean went 5-for-5 for Old Westbury, including three RBI and three runs. DeCola also went 3-for-5 in addition to a solid pitching effort, while right fielder Delana Murray scored three times in a 2-for-5 effort out of the leadoff spot.
The Knights return to action on Tuesday, April 8, when they host Lehman College for a non-conference doubleheader. The first game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
