Softball Splits at Home against Mount Saint Vincent

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College softball team (15-7, 7-1 Skyline) held onto first place in the Skyline Conference with a doubleheader split with the College of Mount Saint Vincent (13-4, 4-3 Skyline) Saturday afternoon at the Mount. The Dolphins took the win in game one, 6-1, but the Knights bounced back with a 1-0 shutout victory in game two.
 
The Knights' only two runs of the day came by solo home run, one in each game. Senior designated player/second baseman Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.) homered in the third inning of game one, but the Knights still trailed by a pair of runs, eventually allowing three more to fall, 6-1. Junior third baseman Danielle Soto (Miller Place, N.Y.) blasted one in the bottom of the sixth in game two to lift the Knights to a 1-0 win.
 
Sophomore starter Victoria Goldbach (Middle Village, N.Y.) suffered just her second loss of the season after allowing six runs across seven innings. Kathleen Davis picked up the win for the Dolphins in the opener with seven innings of one-run ball.
 
Senior starter Amanda Barrese (Staten Island, N.Y.) turned in her best start of the season in Saturday's finale, tossing seven shutout innings and striking out seven to earn her fifth win of the year. Mackenzie Heizer shouldered the loss for Mount Saint Vincent after a solid effort. She allowed just one run across six innings and struck out 14 batters.
 
Freshman second baseman Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 in game one, while Peel hit 1-for-3 with the only RBI on her solo shot. Soto went 1-for-2 with a home run to lead the Knights in game two. Senior catcher Stephanie Karcher (Oxford, Conn.) batted 1-for-3 in both games on Saturday.
 
The Knights get back to action tomorrow, April 6, when they host SUNY College at Old Westbury in a Skyline Conference doubleheader at the Mount. First pitch of game one is set to be tossed at 12 p.m.
