Box Score TROY, N.Y. – An RBI single in the top of the seventh for Farmingdale State College's (21-12) Meagan Anderson broke a 3-3 tie to give the Rams a 4-3 victory over the Mount Saint Mary College softball team (20-13) Friday afternoon at Sage's Robison Field in the opening game of the Skyline Conference Championships. The Knights will now face The Sage Colleges tomorrow, April 26, at 1 p.m. in the tournament's first elimination game.
Anderson singled in the winning run with two away in the top of the seventh inning. The Knights got a hit from senior right fielder
Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.) with one out in the Knights' last at-bat, but it was not enough to spark a rally to tie the game.
Farmingdale took an early 1-0 lead on an error in the top of the second. The Knights grabbed the advantage on a two-run blast by junior catcher
Stephanie Karcher in the bottom of the fourth.
The Rams quickly took the lead back in their next at-bat on back-to-back RBI doubles that put them up, 3-2. The Knights loaded the bases in the home half of the sixth to give themselves a big opportunity to tie and then some. With one out, sophomore first baseman
Kate Zubicki (Kearny, N.J.) drew a walk to bring in the tying run. Consecutive fielder's choices after the walk ended the Knight threat before they could take the lead. That proved to be costly when Anderson knocked in a run the next inning to give the Rams the victory.
Taylor Webb picked up her 11th win of the season after going seven innings and allowing three runs for the Rams. Senior pitcher
Amanda Barrese (Staten Island, N.Y.) tossed 2.1 innings in relief, but suffered the loss after yielding the winning run in the seventh.
Anderson knocked in two runs and scored another in a 2-for-4 effort on Friday. Marissa Monaco picked up a run while going 2-for-3.
Karcher hit 1-for-2 with a two-run homer to lead the Knights in the tournament opener. Freshman second baseman
Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.) hit 2-for-4 with a pair of runs, while junior third baseman
Danielle Soto (Miller Place, N.Y.), freshman shortstop
Breanna DePasquale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Peel each went 1-for-3.
Farmingdale State moves forward to the winners' game tomorrow, when the Rams will take on the College of Mount Saint Vincent at 10 a.m. for the automatic berth into the tournament final. The Knights will face off with the host Gators at 1 p.m. with the loser of the contest being eliminated from the tournament. The winner of the elimination game will play the loser of the winners' game at 4 p.m. for a chance to play for the title on Sunday.
