Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Mount Saint Mary College softball team (4-4) finished up its spring break trip to the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla., on Friday, splitting its doubleheader for the fourth time in as many days. The Knights took down Eastern Nazarene College (3-6), 12-0, in the opener before falling to Wartburg College (13-3), 8-1, to close out the trip.

Junior catcher Stephanie Karcher (Oxford, Conn.) did the early damage in game one with a two-RBI triple in the second inning. She later scored on a sacrifice fly by senior designated player Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.) to put the Knights up 3-0 early. The most damage came in the fourth inning, when the Knights put up nine runs to put the game well out of reach.

Sophomore starter Victoria Goldbach (Middle Village, N.Y.) improved to 2-1 on the season with a five-inning shutout, striking out eight and allowing just three hits. Olivia Tovar took the loss for Eastern Nazarene after allowing 12 runs (10 earned) in four innings of work.

Peel knocked in three runs and scored two more in a 2-for-2 effort in the early game. Sophomore left fielder Kimberly Boice (Kingston, N.Y.) put in a great effort batting behind Peel, going 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run. Freshman second baseman Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.) hit 3-for-3 out of the leadoff spot with a run scored and an RBI.

Catcher Abigail Moore had two of Eastern Nazarene's three hits, going 2-for-2 with a double. Tovar picked up the other hit in a 1-for-2 outing.

The Knights struggled to get runners on base in the later game, making it difficult to come back and Wartburg took an early lead. Wartburg picked up two runs on a two-RBI single by center fielder Dani Gordon to take a 2-0 lead in the second. They later scored five unearned runs in the fourth to up the lead to 7-0. Peel got the Knights on the board in the fifth with her first home run of the season, but Wartburg got that run back in its next at bat with another RBI single by Gordon.

Senior starter Amanda Barrese (Staten Island, N.Y.) fell to 0-3 on the year after allowing eight runs (one earned) in six innings of work. Paige Blom improved to 6-1 for Wartburg after going the complete seven innings and allowing just one run.

Gordon picked up three RBI for Wartburg in a 2-for-3 morning. Second baseman Kirby Meyer went 2-for-3 as well with a run scored. Third baseman Courtney Belk and first baseman Taylor Smola each went 1-for-4 with two RBI.
