FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Mount Saint Mary College softball team (3-3) split its doubleheader for the third time in three days, falling to St. Joseph's College of Maine (4-1), 3-1, before blowing out Wentworth Institute of Technology (0-6), 15-0, in the Knights' third outing of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Thursday.
The Monks got on the board first in the opener with an RBI single by left fielder Theresa Hendrix in the top of the third. The Knights matched in their next at bat when freshman second baseman
Shannon Sommer (Brewster, N.Y.) scored all the way from first on an error by Hendrix to tie the game.
St. Joe's got on the board again in the fifth after catcher Jennifer Murphy reached on an error that scored designated player Lindsay Moore from third. Hendrix scored from third on a passed ball later in the inning to give the Monks a 3-1 lead, which they held through the final out of the game.
Sophomore starter
Victoria Goldbach (Middle Village, N.Y.) suffered a hard-luck loss in the Knights' first game, allowing just one earned run across the complete seven innings. Kylie McFadden grabbed the win for the Monks, going the full seven without allowing an earned run.
Hendrix went 2-for-4 with the only RBI for the Monks in game one. Moore also went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while shortstop Mariah Harrison hit 2-for-2.
Six Knights picked up hits in the opener. Sommer managed to score the only run of the game in a 1-for-4 effort.
It was a much different story for the Knights in game two. They picked up a quick three runs in the bottom of the first, which included an RBI triple by junior third baseman
Danielle Soto (Miller Place, N.Y.). The bulk of the damage came in the third, when the Knights put nine runs on the board, which included runs scored on four straight bases-loaded walks. They added another three runs in the bottom of the fourth before closing things out in the fifth with a mercy-rule five-inning finish.
Sophomore starter
Nicole Lomangino (Wantagh, N.Y.) picked up her second complete-game-shutout victory in as many games, tossing all five innings and allowing just one hit. Haylee Bacik shouldered the loss for the Leopards, allowing 11 runs (nine earned) in 2.1 innings of work.
Goldbach had a wonderful game at the plate, hitting 2-for-3 with three RBI and four runs scored. Soto also went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. Sophomore first baseman
Kate Zubicki (Kearny, N.J.) hit 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Sommer and sophomore right fielder
Brianne Germain (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) each went 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
The Knights finish up their spring break trip tomorrow, March 14, with a 9 a.m. matchup with Eastern Nazarene College, followed by an 11 a.m. contest against Wartburg College.
