Mount Extends Winning Streak to Six

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRONX, N.Y. - Mount Saint Mary College extended its winning streak to six with a sweep of Lehman College in non-conference action on Wednesday.  The Knights (9-7) won the opener, 9-7, and routed the Lightning, 17-2, in game two.

Trailing 6-5 headed to the final inning of the opening game, Mount Saint Mary rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh.  Sophomore Stephanie Karcher (Oxford, Conn.) tied the game with a solo home run to lead off the inning, but the Knights wouldn't stop there.  With runners at first and second and two outs, senior Victoria DeMarco (Hicksville, N.Y.) came through with a clutch double to give the Knights the lead.  Freshman Erin Moran (Massapequa, N.Y.) followed with a two-run single, pushing the Mount's advantage to 9-6.

The Lightning pushed across one run in their half of the seventh and loaded the bases with two outs.  But Mount senior Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) struck out the final batter of the game to preserve the two-run win.  Maynes, who pitched all seven innings, allowed 11 hits, seven earned runs, and struck out nine.

Karcher led the Knights with a 2-for-3 performance that also included two runs and two RBIs.  Senior Ashley Schirripa (Staten Island, N.Y.), junior Nicole Petkevicius (Long Beach, N.Y.), and freshman Sabrina Gordek (Levittown, N.Y.) each added a pair of hits for the Mount.

After scoring the opening run in the top of the first inning of game two, the Knights took control with seven runs in the second inning.  They added four in the third, one in the fourth, and four more in the fifth as they cruised to the 17-2 victory.

Karcher went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, three RBIs and another home run.  DeMarco, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs, added a solo homer in the fourth.  Gordek had another multi-hit game (2-for-4, three runs, RBI), while junior Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.) contributed a solo home run in the second inning.

Maynes also went the distance in game two to pick up her second victory of the day.  She allowed five hits and two runs while striking out five.

The Knights pick back up with Skyline Conference play on Thursday at Purchase College.  A double-header with the Panthers is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. in Purchase, New York.
