Knights Split With Sage, Miss Out On Skyline Playoffs

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWBURGH, N.Y.— Entering the day needing to win both games to qualify for the postseason, Mount Saint Mary College lost the back end of a double-header on Sunday in Newburgh and will miss the Skyline Conference Tournament.  The Knights won game one, 5-2, but the Sage Colleges bounced back to take game two, 10-5.

The Knights jumped out to an early lead in game one.  Freshman Kimberly Boice (Kingston, N.Y.) led off the first inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Danielle Soto (Miller Place, N.Y.).  Boice scored on a single by junior Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.).  Peel was driven in by senior Ashley Schirripa (Staten Island, N.Y.), putting the lead at 2-0.  Schirripa later scored on a throwing error by Sage centerfielder Tiffany Bezio after junior Chelsea Hepburn (New York, N.Y.) singled.

Mount Saint Mary held on to the 3-0 lead until the top of the fourth inning when Sage put two runs on the board.  Peel gave the Knights some insurance when her triple in the bottom of the fifth plated Soto who was on base after a walk.  Schirripa drove Peel in for a second time with a single, putting the score at 5-2.

That was all the Knights would need to secure the victory.  Senior Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) scattered six hits and five walks along with four strikeouts to earn the win.

Game two of the double-header had playoff implications for both teams.  The winner of the game would earn the final playoff spot for the conference playoffs.  Sage got off to a hot start putting up five runs in the top of the first inning.  The Mount bounced right back in the bottom of the inning, however, getting a pair of RBIs from Schirripa and another one from Hepburn.  Boice and Peel also scored a couple of unearned runs, and the game headed into the second inning with a tie score, 5-5.

Sage scored a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to go on top 8-5.  In the top of the sixth, Sage added extra runs with RBIs from Kelsey Newberg and Hillary Faas.  Unfortunately the Mount wasn't able to get a rally going, and lost by a final score of 10-5.

In between games, the Mount honored their three seniors.  Schirripa finishes her two-year career at the Mount with 64 hits, 32 runs scored, and 35 RBIs.  Victoria DeMarco (Hicksville, N.Y.) played 124 games for the Knights starting in 123 of them.  She finishes her career with 92 hits and 51 RBIs.  Maynes ends her career as one of the best pitchers in program history.  She caps off a storied career with program records in career wins (47), career innings pitched (530), and career strikeouts (353).

The Gators head into the playoffs with a conference record of 9-5 (19-16 overall) while the Knights end their season 7-7 (18-16 overall).
