PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College split a Skyline Conference double-header with St. Joseph's College on Saturday to remain alive for a berth in the upcoming Skyline Tournament. The Knights (18-15, 6-6 Skyline) won the opener, 3-1, while the Golden Eagles (21-17, 9-5 Skyline) won game two, 11-3.
Senior
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) went the distance in game one, allowing just seven hits and one run while striking out seven. Maynes was able to strand 10 Golden Eagles on the base paths.
The Knights opened the scoring in the second with a solo home run from junior
Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.). St. Joseph's answered with a run in the bottom of the second, but the Mount took the lead right back on an error by the Golden Eagles in the top of the third. Still leading 2-1, the Knights added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single from freshman
Julianne Tracy (Glendale, N.Y.).
Freshman
Kimberly Boice (Kingston, N.Y.) led the Knights in game one with a 3-for-4 performance that included a run scored.
In game two, the Golden Eagles jumped out to a big lead with six runs in the bottom of the second. The Knights cut the deficit to 7-3 on a two-run homer from sophomore
Stephanie Karcher (Oxford, Conn.) in the fifth, but they would get no closer. St. Joseph's added four runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach and went on to the 11-3 win.
Boice added two more hits (2-for-3) to go along with an RBI. Karcher finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs.
Mount Saint Mary will host Sage for a Skyline double-header tomorrow at noon. The Knights will need to win both games to claim the final spot in next week's Skyline Tournament.
