NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College conceded three runs in the top of the seventh inning, allowing NYU-Poly to rally for a 3-1 victory in game one of Sunday's Skyline Conference double-header. The Fighting Blue Jays (17-8, 8-2 Skyline) won the second game, 8-4, to complete the sweep of the Knights (14-12, 5-5 Skyline).
Scoreless through the first five innings of game one, Mount Saint Mary scratched out a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 1-0 lead. Junior
Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.) scored on an error by the NYU-Poly shortstop, but the Knights left runners at second and third when sophomore
Stephanie Karcher (Oxford, Conn.) popped up to second to end the inning.
NYU-Poly junior Megan Moran (Reno, Nevada) singled up the middle to lead off the seventh and moved to second on an error by the Mount right fielder. With one out, senior Natalia Stockinger (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) singled to left center, allowing Moran to score from third and put runners at the corner. Junior Ryane Pappa (Naperville, Ill.) followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Fighting Blue Jays a 2-1 advantage. The visitors added a third run and carried a 3-1 lead to the seventh.
The Knights went quietly in the seventh, allowing the Fighting Blue Jays to escape with the come-from-behind victory. Mount senior starting pitcher
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) was a hard luck loser, allowing just five hits and three unearned runs while striking out five. NYU-Poly senior Miranda Merilli (Altoona, Pa.) went the distance and allowed just one hit to claim the win.
In game two, NYU-Poly jumped out to an early lead when Feist launched a two-run homer to left in the third inning. The Fighting Blue Jays stretched away with five runs in the sixth and took an 8-1 advantage to the late innings.
Peel picked up an RBI with a single through the left side in the sixth and senior
Chelsea Hepburn (New York, N.Y.) came through with an RBI single in the seventh, but the Knights' rally would come up short.
Senior
Victoria DeMarco (Hicksville, N.Y.) finished with a pair of hits for the Knights, as did freshman
Kimberly Boice (Kingston, N.Y.). Hoeschen led NYU-Poly with a 4-for-4 performance that included a run and an RBI. Merilli claimed her second win of the day, working five innings while allowing five hits and striking out five.
The Knights will host SUNY New Paltz in non-conference action on Wednesday, April 17. The games are set for a 3:30 p.m. start on the MSMC Softball Field.
