Box Score 2 NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Senior
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) led the Mount Saint Mary Knights to a win against the Farmingdale Rams in game one of a Skyline Conference double-header Saturday afternoon in Newburgh. Playing for the first time on their new on-campus field, the Knights won 2-1 but later dropped game two 3-0. The Knights are now 5-3 in the conference (14-10 overall) while Farmingdale moves to 8-4 in the Skyline (15-13 overall).
The Knights jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning of game one when freshman
Sabrina Gordek (Levittown, N.Y.) and sophomore
Danielle Soto (Miller Place, N.Y.) drew back-to-back walks. They each advanced a base when sophomore
Stephanie Karcher (Oxford, Conn.) grounded out to first base. After senior
Ashley Schirripa (Staten Island, N.Y.) drew the third walk of the inning, junior
Chelsea Hepburn (New York, N.Y.) drove Gordek in with a single putting the Knights on top 1-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, junior
Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn) led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior
Victoria DeMarco (Hicksville, N.Y.). Peel then scored when freshman
Kimberly Boice (Kingston, N.Y.) hit a double, bumping the score up to 2-0.
That was all Maynes would need to earn her first victory against Farmingdale in her four year career. Despite giving up a run in the top of the sixth to put the score at 2-1, Maynes scattered five hits and five strikeouts in seven innings.
The Rams bounced back to shutout the Knights in game two. Farmingdale pitcher Taylor Webb went the distance, giving up only four hits.
The Knights return to the field tomorrow in another Skyline battle against NYU-Poly. The double-header is set for a noon start.
