Brooklyn Sweeps Mount

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BROOKLYN, N.Y. – With a pair of come-from-behind wins, Brooklyn College took both ends of a double-header (6-4 & 11-10) from Mount Saint Mary College in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon.  The Bulldogs move to 2-0, while the Knights drop to 3-7 overall.

Trailing 3-2 in the opening game, the Knights plated a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to seize a 4-3 advantage.  Freshmen Julianne Tracy (Glendale, N.Y.) and Erin Moran (Massapequa, N.Y.) combined on back-to-back run-scoring singles as the Knights strung together four hits in the frame.

The lead would be short-lived, however, as Brooklyn answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Senior Kim Konklewski (Deer Park, N.Y.) delivered the big blow with a two-run double to right-center and then came around to score on a triple from sophomore Kayla Hill (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

Mount senior Ashley Schirippa (Staten Island, N.Y.) doubled in the seventh, but would be stranded on the base paths as the Knights grounded into three outs in the inning.

Moran led the Knights with a 2-for-3 performance that included a run and an RBI.  Junior Chelsea Hepburn (New York, N.Y.) also added a pair of hits for the Mount.  Senior pitcher Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) took the loss.

In game two, the Knights roared out of the gates with two runs in the first, a run in the second, and two more in the third.  Then, in the fifth inning, the Mount seemingly blew the game wide open with four more runs to take a 9-2 advantage.  Sophomore Stephanie Karcher (Oxford, Conn.) led off with a double and then scored on a Hepburn single.  Junior Nicole Petkevicius (Long Beach, N.Y.) followed with a double to plate Hepburn and then scored easily when freshman Victoria Goldbach (Middle Village, N.Y.) laced a triple down the right field line.  Freshman Sabrina Gordek (Levittown, N.Y.) capped the inning with a single to score Goldbach.

But Brooklyn wasn't ready to concede just yet.  The Bulldogs sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the inning, tallying six runs on three hits and one Mount error.  When Hill lined out to the pitcher to end the inning, Brooklyn trailed by just one run, 9-8.

Karcher added an insurance run for the Knights with a solo home run in the top of the sixth, but it wouldn't be enough.  The Bulldogs plated two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on two hits and yet another Mount error to tie the game at 10-10.

After a scoreless seventh for both teams, the Knights put runners on first and third with one out in the eighth.  It wouldn't produce a run, however, as Hepburn grounded a pitch to shortstop and Schirippa was tagged out at the plate trying to score.  Petkevicius lined out to right to end the inning.

Brooklyn put runners on the corners via a Mount error and a bunt single in the bottom half of the eighth.  Still with nobody out, junior Allison Donovan (Middle Village, N.Y.) laid down another bunt, allowing junior Amanda Bisz (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) to score the winning run from third to cap a the big comeback.

The Knights had 16 hits in game two, including a 2-for-4 outing from Hepburn that also featured two runs scored and three RBIs.  Petkevicius went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, while Goldbach was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Moran, Schirippa, and sophomore Danielle Soto (Miller Place, N.Y.) also had a pair of hits for the Knights.  Junior pitcher Amanda Barrese (Staten Island, N.Y.) took the loss.

The Mount opens Skyline Conference play on Saturday with a trip to the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
