Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Mount Saint Vincent to Advance to Skyline Semifinals

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Sophomore middle blocker Kayla Kurka (Islip, N.Y.) continued her hot streak, hitting .476 on Wednesday to lead the No. 5-seeded Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team (17-19, 6-3 Skyline) to a 3-0 (25-10, 25-22, 25-19) straight-set victory over No. 4 College of Mount Saint Vincent (8-18, 6-3 Skyline) to advance to the Skyline Conference Championship semifinals, which will be held as part of the Skyline Fall Festival that will take place at the Kaplan Center on Saturday, Nov. 9.

Kurka threw down a match-high 12 kills in Wednesday's quarterfinal victory. Freshman setter Claire Scully (Bloomfield, N.J.) dished out 31 assists to lead the match, while sophomore libero Jen Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) led the Knights with 13 digs. Junior defensive specialist Brianna Johnston (Breezy Point, N.Y.) picked up six service aces as well.

The Knights charged into battle on Wednesday, marching out to a quick 25-10 first-set victory. The Dolphins played it close in the final two sets, but the Knights were able to close out each one to secure the sweep.

Maria Leineweber led Mount Saint Vincent with six kills, while Zana Daluz passed out 16 assists. Erika Moncada tied Gries for the match high with 13 digs, while Leineweber added 12 of her own.

The Knights will face off with top-seeded Sage Colleges on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Kaplan Center. The winner of that match will take on the winner of Farmingdale State College vs. St. Joseph's College (L.I.) in the tournament final, which will also take place on Saturday during the Fall Festival.
