NEWBURGH, N.Y. – After falling in the Skyline Conference Championship finals a year ago, the Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team (10-4-2, 5-2-2 Skyline) returns to the Skyline Tournament this year as the No. 3 seed. The Knights host St. Joseph's College (L.I.) (5-13-2, 4-4-1 Skyline) in a quarterfinal matchup tomorrow, Nov. 2.
Saturday's contest is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. from Kaplan Field. The winner will go on to the semifinal matchup at Purchase College on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
In their regular-season matchup, the Golden Eagles upset the Knights with a game-winning goal with less than three minutes remaining in regulation. With the quarterfinal matchup taking place on the Knights' home turf, they will look to change their luck against a team that they have not beaten in the regular season in eight years.
The Knights are led into battle by junior forward
Matt Garcia (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.). His 15 goals and 36 points lead the Skyline Conference. Senior midfielders
Brandon Mincher (Bayport, N.Y.) and
Sean Lockwood (Manahawkin, N.J.) follow Garcia with 22 points each. Lockwood is tied for second in the conference with 10 assists, while Mincher has seven goals and eight assists on the year. Sophomore midfielder
Michael Ennis (Carmel, N.Y.) is second on the team with eight goals.
Terrence Dzus heads the Golden Eagle attack, having a team-leading 19 points going into Saturday's postseason matchup. Dzus scored eight goals during the regular season and added three assists. Fabio Alves also has eight goals and has dished out a pair of assists. Andrew Stasiewicz leads the Golden Eagles with six assists on the season.
Senior goalkeeper
Matt Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.) has had a solid season for the Knights, posting an .840 save percentage and 1.11 goals against average en route to a 10-3-2 overall record. He has also posted six shutouts. Freshman goalkeeper
Tyler Biscone (Garden City, N.Y.) has made seven saves in four appearances this season.
Freshman goalkeeper Avery Gomez owns a 4-8-2 record for the Golden Eagles this season. He enters the postseason with a .655 save percentage and 2.74 goals against average. He has made 78 saves in 1344:44 between the pipes. Sophomore goalkeeper Niko Petratos holds a 0-4-1 record in six appearances. He has made 36 saves for a .692 save percentage and a 2.82 goals against average.
The Knights hold a 5-1-0 record at home this season, dropping only their final regular-season home game to Purchase College on Saturday, Oct. 26, in a 5-4 overtime defeat. The visiting Golden Eagles are just 2-6-1 on the road this year.
