Comeback Falls Short at Farmingdale

Box Score FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - A second half comeback came up a bit short on Monday evening as Mount Saint Mary College fell to Farmingdale State College in Skyline action by a final score of 72-66.  The Knights drop back to 7-6 overall (4-3 Skyline), while the Rams move up to 9-4 overall (5-1 Skyline).

Trailing by 10 at the break and by as many as 14 in the second half, the Knights began to rally as the clock ran towards the five minute mark.  Down by 13 at that point, a dunk by junior Joe Henain (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) at the 5:06 mark got things started.  Another Henain bucket with 3:38 remaining cut the deficit to single digits.  Then, when Farmingdale was hit with a pair of technical fouls with 3:20 to go, junior Donte Howell (Baldwin, N.Y.) stepped to the line and hit four consecutive free throws to make it a five-point game (62-57).

On the ensuing possession, Henain missed and collected his own rebound, only to be blocked on his second attempt.  Junior Joe Stabach (Staten Island, N.Y.) collected the loose ball and found Henain once again, who sunk a jumper to make it 62-59, Rams.  Farmingdale senior Ryan Davis (Flushing, N.Y.) answered at the other end, the first points for Farmingdale in nearly five and a half minutes, to push the lead back to five.  But this time it was Howell who had a response, completing a three-point play to get the Knights to within two (64-62).

Farmingdale took advantage of an offensive rebound on its next trip, as sophomore Justin Bailey (Jamaica, N.Y.) put home a second chance opportunity to make it 66-62.  After Henain missed a pair of free throws with 1:02 remaining, Howell committed a foul to send Bailey to the line where he made both attempts to make it a six-point game.  Howell connected on a pair of free throws with 48 seconds to go, and after a Farmingdale turnover, hit a layup with 14 seconds on the clock to make it 68-66.  But the Rams hit both free throws with nine seconds to play to put the game out of reach.  Howell's three-pointer with three seconds left was off the mark and Farmingdale iced the game with two more free throws.

Howell led all scorers with 21 points, hitting on 4-of-8 from the field and 12-of-15 from the line.  Henain added 12 points and eight rebounds, while Stabach finished with 11 points.  The Knights shot below 40-percent (39.3) for the sixth time this season - five of which have resulted in defeat.

Davis hit five three-pointers to lead Farmingdale with 19 points and six assists.  Senior AJ Matthews (Brooklyn, N.Y.), was limited to just 12 points and five rebounds before he fouled out with three minutes remaining.  The Rams shot 49.0-percent from the field but suffered 17 turnovers.  They held a 43-27 advantage on the glass.

Mount Saint Mary faces another road trip on Wednesday, this time to Sage.  The Knights take on the Gators at 7:00 p.m. on January 16.
