Knights Concede First Skyline Conference Contest

Box Score

NEWBURGH, N.Y. - After giving up two first half goals to visiting St. Joseph's College, the Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team dropped its first Skyline Conference contest, 2-0. The loss moves the Knights to 5-5 on the year and 2-1 in Skyline play, while the Golden Eagles improve to 4-7 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in 27th minute, converting a corner kick into their first goal of the day. St. Joseph's senior Bradley O'Brien (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) placed a corner kick into the middle of the box, where junior Terrence Dzus (Central Islip, N.Y.) one touched the ball into the back of the net.

With 42:16 elapsed in the first half, St. Joseph's junior Fabio Alves (Holbrook, N.Y.) just missed a scoring opportunity as he ricocheted a shot of the crossbar. The Knights responded with an excellent scoring chance of their own, as freshman Alex Tolman (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) played a through ball behind the Golden Eagles' backline. Junior Sean Barton (Wallkill, N.Y.) ran onto the ball and pushed it wide of the net.

In the closing two minutes of the half, St. Joseph's junior Anthony Rappa (West Babylon, N.Y.) dribbled down the right side and crossed the ball towards the top of the box. Alves collected Rappa's cross and fired a shot with the outside of his foot just inside the far right post to put the Golden Eagles on top, 2-0.

Both teams battled throughout the second half, but neither team was able to score. Trailing by two and with an offensive game plan to push forward, the Mount nearly struck through for their first of the day. In the 86th minute, Barton finished a shot into the back of the net, but the goal was negated by an offsides call.

The Knights held a slight lead in shots (15-12) on the game, however only six of these were on net. Mount goalkeeper Matt Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.) finished with six saves, while St. Joseph's goalkeeper Chris Muhs (West Babylon, N.Y.) also made six saves.

The Knights will return to action on Saturday, October 6 with a home contest against Farmingdale State College. Game time is 12:00 p.m.
