NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Behind a goal in each half, New Paltz defeated Mount Saint Mary College by a final score of 2-0 in non-conference action Wednesday night on Kaplan Field. The Hawks improve to 2-1-1 overall, while the Knights drop back to 2-3.
New Paltz had a pair of early chances, but junior goalkeeper
Matt Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.) was up to the task each time. In the 25th minute, Mount Saint Mary had perhaps its best chance of the night as a long ball from the back found the foot of freshman
Alex Tolman (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). Tolman fired a shot just over the bar and the game remained scoreless.
Freshman Joseph Hughes (Westbury, N.Y.) broke through for the Hawks at the end of the 39th minute. Following a tic-tac-toe passing sequence, junior Mike Jacobsen (Guilford, Conn.) one-touched the ball to the left side and Hughes beat Darling at the right post to give New Paltz a 1-0 advantage.
The Hawks added an insurance goal in the 62nd minute when senior Mateo Cordini (Buenos Aires, Argentina) was fouled in the box. Darling guessed correctly with his dive on the ensuing penalty kick, but Cordini's attempt was well-struck and found the netting inside the left post.
Tolman had a second excellent chance in the 78th minute. With the New Paltz goalkeeper off his line, Tolman rifled a shot on net but the ball was cleared away at the line by a sliding Hawks defender. The Knights managed just one more shot on goal over the remaining 12 minutes and New Paltz emerged with the 2-0 win.
Darling made eight saves in defeat for the Knights. New Paltz sophomore goalkeeper Steven Domino (Valatie, N.Y.) made four saves, but had to leave the game in the 87th minute following a collision in the box.
The Knights return to action on Saturday when they'll host the University of Scranton. Game time is set for noon on Kaplan Field.
