NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. - After losing the opening game, 5-4, the Mount Saint Mary College softball team responded with an 11-0 victory in game two to salvage a split with Lehman College on Wednesday. The Knights move to 13-17 overall.
In the opener, the Knights trailed, 5-3, headed to the bottom of the seventh inning. Freshman
Victoria Lane (Huntington, N.Y.) led off the inning with a double and then scored to cut the deficit to just one. A comeback wasn't meant to be, however, as with one out and runners at first and second, senior
Lacey Kehlenbeck (Port Jervis, N.Y.) lined into a double play to end the ball game.
Kehlenbeck finished 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI, while Lane finished 2-for-4 with a run. Junior
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 at the dish and scored a pair of runs. Maynes also went the distance in the circle, allowing eight hits and just two earned runs while striking out seven.
In game two, MSMC got one run in the first on an RBI single from sophomore
Chelsea Hepburn (New York, N.Y.). But the big damage would come in the third inning, as the Knights hung six runs on the board. Back-to-back extra base hits from freshman
Stephanie Karcher (Oxford, Conn.) and Lane produced a pair of runs and freshman
Maggie Boyd (Sayville, N.Y.) followed with an RBI single. Boyd later scored on a Lehman error to cap the six-run effort.
The Knights added four more runs in the fourth, allowing them to close the door on a five-inning shutout. Maynes and sophomore
Amanda Barrese (Staten Island, N.Y.) combined on a two-hit shuout. Kehlenbeck, Hepburn, Lane, Boyd, and freshman
Angela Zayas (Livingston Manor, N.Y.) all finished with a pair of hits for the Mount. Hepburn, Lane, and Boyd each added a pair of RBIs, while Zayas and Hepburn both scored a pair of runs.
Up next for the Mount is a crucial Skyline Conference double-header with Old Westbury. The games have playoff implications for both sides and are set for a noon start on Saturday at NFA North.
