Mount Splits Skyline Weekend

NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Following a pair of tight losses to Polytechnic Institue of NYU on Saturday, Mount Saint Mary College responded well with two wins over Purchase College on Sunday.  The Knights move to 12-16 overall and to 7-5 in the Skyline.

Junior Victoria DeMarco (Hicksville, N.Y.) and freshman Stephanie Karcher (Oxford, Conn.) both homered in game two of Sunday's double-header with Purchase.  Karcher's grand slam in the first inning gave the Knights a 5-1 advantage, while DeMarco's three-run blast in the fourth capped the scoring for the Mount and made the score, 11-2.

Sophomore starting pitcher Amanda Barrese (Staten Island, N.Y.) allowed three hits and two earned runs to earn the victory in the circle.  MSMC went on to win, 11-3.

In game one, the Knights jumped all over the Panthers with eight runs in the first inning.  Junior Ashley Schirripa (Staten Island, N.Y.) got things started with a two-run single and after the Mount had sent 12 batters to the plate, senior Lacey Kehlenbeck (Port Jervis, N.Y.) completed the inning by scoring on a wild pitch.

MSMC added three more runs in the third on run-scoring singles from DeMarco and freshman Victoria Lane (Huntington, N.Y.).  All told in game one, DeMarco finished 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI, while Kehlenbeck went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Karcher also added a pair of hits and a pair of runs scored, but it was sophomore Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.) who stole the show with a 3-for-3 effort.  Peel scored twice and added an RBI.

Junior Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) allowed just one hit over five innings while striking out five.  Her no-hit bid was broken up by a bunt single in the top of the fifth inning, but the Knights were satisfied with the 11-0 victory.

On Saturday, NYU-Poly won the opening game, 1-0, on a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.  The Fighting Blue Jays took the nightcap, 5-2.

Mount Saint Mary will host Lehman College in a non-conference double-header on Wednesday.  The games are set for a 3:30 p.m. start at the Mount Airy Sports Park in New Windsor.
