NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Following a 1-0 loss in the opening game, Mount Saint Mary College responded with a 5-4, walk-off win in game two of Wednesday's non-conference double-header with the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The Knights are now 9-13 on the year.
Trailing 4-2 in the fifth inning of game two, Mount sophomore
Chelsea Hepburn (New York, N.Y.) lined a two-run home run to left-center to tie the game. Then, in the seventh, the Knights loaded the bases for sophomore
Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.). Peel ripped a ball through the left side, allowing Hepburn to score the winning run.
The home run was the only hit of the game for Hepburn, who finished 1-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Peel went 3-for-4 with the game-winning RBI. Sophomore pitcher
Amanda Barrese (Staten Island, N.Y.) went the distance for the victory, allowing seven hits and four earned runs while striking out five.
In the opener, the Knights wasted a stellar effort from junior starting pitcher
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.). Maynes allowed just five hits and an unearned run while walking just one and striking out nine.
The only run of the game in the third inning. With two outs, Maynes struck out what should have been the final batter of the inning, but a dropped third strike forced a throw to first. The ball ticked off the first baseman's glove and scooted into right field, allowing the John Jay runner to score from second.
The Knights managed just five hits of their own in the opener and left nine runners on the basepaths. Only Peel came away with multiple hits in a 2-for-3 showing.
Mount Saint Mary heads to Sage tomorrow for a rescheduled Skyline Conference double-header. The first game is set for a 3:30 p.m. start in Troy, New York.
