NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Trailing into the seventh inning, the Mount Saint Mary College softball team (6-10) came from behind to beat SUNY New Paltz (5-9) in game one of a nonconference doubleheader on Wednesday. Despite the 5-3 victory in game one, the Mount went on to lose game two, 5-0.
In game one, the Mount got off to an early lead in the top of the second when freshman
Maggie Boyd (Sayville, N.Y.) singled in sophomore
Chelsea Hepburn (New York, N.Y.) and freshman
Stephanie Karcher (Oxford, Conn.). New Paltz jumped ahead with two outs in the bottom of the fourth by scoring three unearned runs. After tight defense by both teams, the Mount finally regained the lead in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs,
Lacey Kehlenbeck (Port Jervis, N.Y.) and
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) hit back-to-back singles and scored on freshman
Danielle Soto's (Miller Place, N.Y.) double to left field. Sophomore
Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.) followed with a double of her own, plating Soto and solidifying the Mount's sixth win of the year.
Maynes scattered six hits over seven innings while striking out three. Karcher, Soto, and Kehlenbeck all finished with two hits apiece.
Meg Brewer (Bayport, N.Y.) shut out the Knights in game two allowing only two hits. Senior
