FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - Despite leading in each game, the Mount Saint Mary College softball team lost both games to Farmingdale State College in a Skyline Conference double-header on Sunday. The Knights are now 5-9 overall.
In game one, MSMC got on the board first with two runs in the opening inning. Senior
Lacey Kehlenbeck (Port Jervis, N.Y.) singled and moved to second when junior
Victoria DeMarco (Hicksville, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch. Following a sac bunt, sophomore
Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.) singled to drive home both runs.
The Knights scratched out another run in the third to lead, 3-0, but Farmingdale had an answer. The Rams strung together seven hits in the fourh inning for six runs and a three-run lead. Farmingdale added two more in the fifth to seize an 8-3 advantage.
The Mount tried to piece together a rally in the seventh. Sophomore
Chelsea Hepburn (New York, N.Y.) tripled to left field to drive home a pair of runners and then scored herself on a Farmingdale error. But with runners at first and second, senior
Danielle Orender (Wall, N.J.) lined out to third, allowing the Rams to take an 8-6 decision.
In game two, Hepburn provided the power again, this time launching a two-run home run in the second to give the Knights a 2-0 advantage. Farmingdale rallied again, this time with two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth to capture a 4-2 victory.
Hepburn finished the day 2-for-7 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Peel wound up 2-for-6 with two RBIs and a run scored, while freshman
Danielle Soto (Miller Place, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Knights head to New Paltz for a double-header on Wednesday, March 28. The games are scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
