NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College scored one run in the sixth and one run in the seventh to earn 5-4 victory over Hunter College in game two of a non-conference double-header on Wednesday. The Knights (3-7) defeated the Hawks (3-7) by a score of 4-0 in the opener.
With the Knights leading 3-0 headed to the fifth inning of game two, Hunter took the lead on a three-run home run from junior Sophia Ponce (Bronx, N.Y.). The Knights went quietly in the bottom half of the fifth, but were able to tie the game in the sixth. Sophomore
Chelsea Hepburn (New York, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a base hit from sophomore
Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.). Unfortunately for the Knights, a second runner was thrown out at the plate on the play, sending the game to the seventh frame with the score at 4-4.
In the top half of the inning, Hunter freshman Briana Kresback (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) laced a two-out single and then moved to second on a passed ball. When Ponce singled, Kresback attempted to score from second, but was gunned down by Mount junior center fielder
Ashley Schirripa (Staten Island, N.Y.).
Junior
Victoria DeMarco (Hicksville, N.Y.) drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh and advanced to third on a base hit from Schirripa. With the next batter, Hepburn, facing a 2-1 count, Hunter's senior pitcher, Lauren Stensland (Babylon, N.Y.), fired a wild pitch, allowing DeMarco to score the winning run in walk-off fashion.
DeMarco finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Schirripa, who scored one run and drove in another, rapped out two hits, as did Hepburn. Sophomore starting pitcher
Amanda Barrese (Staten Island, N.Y.) went the distance to earn the win.
In game one, junior starting pitcher
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits while striking out six.
The Knights got on the board in the first inning as senior
Lacey Kehlenbeck (Port Jervis, N.Y.) and freshman
Danielle Soto (Miller Place, N.Y.) both crossed the plate on a Hunter fielding error. MSMC added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth when senior
Danielle Orender (Wall, N.J.) smacked a two-run single to plate Hepburn and Schirripa.
MSMC managed just three hits in the opening game, but with Maynes cruising in the circle, it was good enough for the 4-0 win.
Up next for the Knights is a Skyline Conference weekend. They'll host St. Joseph's College in a double-header on Friday at 3:30 p.m. before traveling to Farmingdale on Sunday for a noon start.
