Joe Stabach (Staten Island, N.Y.) drained eight three-pointers for a game-high 24 points as his team defeated New Jersey City University, 73-62, in the quarterfinal round of the ECAC Metro Region Tournament on Wednesday evening. The Knights improve to 21-7 overall, while the Gothic Knights end the season at 17-8.
With the game tied at 53-53 and 7:43 remaining, the Knights put together a decisive 15-0 run. Stabach kicked things off with a three-pointer at 6:41 and senior
Kevin Milella (Floral Park, N.Y.) followed with a bucket in the paint. Stabach drained another triple with 5:34 to play, and this time, it was followed by three-pointer from sophomore
Donte Howell (Baldwin, N.Y.). Now with 4:09 to play, senior
Carlos Valdez (Carolina, Puerto Rico) finally put home a layup on his third consecutive put back attempt. After an NJCU miss at the other end, Milella capped the run with a foul line jumper to give the Knights a 68-53 advantage.
Stabach shot the ball incredibly well, connecting on 8-of-15 from downtown. Howell was also excellent from three, hitting 5-of-7 for 15 points to complement a game-high eight assists. Milella added 17 points on 8-of-13 from the field, while Valdez filled up the stat line with 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and four steals.
NJCU junior Kaihrique Irick (Teaneck, N.J.) starred for the Gothic Knights, scoring 21 points on 9-of-17 from the floor. Senior Keith Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) added 11 points.
The Knights shot 46.7-percent for the contest and dished out 19 assists against only 14 turnovers. New Jersey City shot 43.9-percent but committed 20 turnovers.
The win was the 50th career victory for Mount head coach
