NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Playing their second game in as many days, the Mount Saint Mary College team dropped a 1-0 decision to Rutgers-Newark in a non-conference contest. With the regular season waning down, the Knights move to 8-7-1 on the year, while the Scarlet Raiders advance to 13-6-0.
The Scarlet Raiders nearly jumped out to an early lead just thirteen minutes into the game, as senior William Munoz (Jersey City, N.J.) sent a free kick sailing into the box that Mount goalkeeper
Matt Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.) punched away. Darling was forced to make a second save, as Munoz collected the loose ball rebound and fired it back towards the net. About halfway through the first, the Knights struck with their first scoring opportunity. Freshman
Michael Ennis (Carmel, N.Y.) dribbled down the left side and drilled a shot from 25 yards out on the left side of the field. Ennis' shot ricocheted off the left post and traveled parallel to the goal line across the net.
Just three minutes into the second half the Scarlet Raiders were able to convert a corner kick opportunity to take the lead. Darling saved the initial shot off the head of junior Rafael Donado (Paterson, N.J.), but was not able to hold onto the ball. Rutgers-Newark freshman Amro Fawzy (Jersey City, N.J.) collected the loose ball and placed it into the back of the goal to put the Scarlet Raiders up, 1-0.
Darling finished with eight saves, while a duo of freshman, Matt Broomall (Somers Point, N.J.) and Brady O'Connor (Livingston, N.J.), combined for the shutout for the Scarlet Raiders.
In the midst of a string of games, the Knights will return to action tomorrow, as they travel to Yeshiva. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.
