Mount Stumbles at Farmingdale

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – After winning their last eight straight games, the Mount Saint Mary College men's basketball team fell by a score of 76-55 to Farmingdale State College in a Skyline Conference match-up. The loss moves the Knights to 13-5 overall and 8-3 in Skyline Conference play, while the Rams improve to 14-4 and 10-1 in the conference.

With the Rams leading throughout the first half, a layup by Mount junior Ryan Straub (Massapequa, N.Y.) with 3:13 remaining in the first, cut the Rams lead to seven, 26-19. The Knights would remain scoreless as the first half wound down and the Rams closed out the half with a 10-0 run to move the score to 36-19 at the break.

Trailing by a score of 41-25 at 16:52 mark, Mount senior Kevin Milella (Floral Park, N.Y.) knocked down a jumper and ignited a 16-2 run that spanned four minutes. Six different Knights added buckets during the run, as a layup by junior Chris Frey (Old Brookville, N.Y.) made it a two point game, 43-41, with 12:14 showing on the clock.

The Rams responded with a run of their own, as they scored the next five points of the game to extend their lead to seven, 48-41. Shooting was the difference in the game, as the Knights shot just 30.7-percent from the field.

Milella led the Knights with 18 points. Junior Carlos Valdez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) was the only other Knight to reach double-digits with 11 points and 11 boards. Frey grabbed seven rebounds and sophomore Donte Howell (Baldwin, N.Y.) chipped in with eight points.

Farmingdale State College junior AJ Matthews (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had an impressive night. Matthews scored 22 points, grabbed 23 rebounds and blocked nine shots. Senior Dyshaun Flournoy (Brentwood, N.Y.) added 16 points in the win.

The Knights will return to action on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 for a mid-week match-up against The Sage Colleges. The Mount will host the Gators in a Skyline Conference contest that is slated to start at 7:00 p.m.
