Mount Claims Seventh Straight

Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Led by 15 points each from sophomores Donte Howell (Baldwin, N.Y.) and Joe Stabach (Staten Island, N.Y.), Mount Saint Mary defeated the Polytechnic Institute of NYU by a final score of 90-68 on Thursday evening inside the Kaplan Center.  The Knights have now won seven games in a row and stand at 12-4 overall (7-2 Skyline), while the Fighting Blue Jays remain winless at 0-14 overall (0-9 Skyline).

With his team trailing by two (17-15) at the 12:23 mark of the first half, Mount sophomore Anthony Cipriano (Staten Island, N.Y.) drained a three-pointer to kick off a 17-0 run for the Knights that would seemingly give them control.  NYU-Poly wasn't ready to go away, however, and answered with 11-0 run to get within four.  Then, with just one second remaining in the half, NYU-Poly junior Jason Samuels (Holmdel, N.J.) completed a three-point play to bring the Fighting Blue Jays within two (36-34) at the break.

NYU-Poly tied the game out of the break, but the Knights crept away with a mini 6-0 run, highlighted by a four-point play from Stabach.  The sophomore was fouled while draining a three-point from the corner and made the ensuing free throw to give the Mount a 42-36 lead.  Still leading by single digits, the Knights pulled away convincingly with a 14-2 run.  Another Cipriano three was followed by a fast break layup from senior Carlos Valdez (Carolina, Puerto Rico) and a triple from Howell, giving the Knights a 66-49 advantage with 8:24 remaining.  NYU-Poly wouldn't get closer than 11 for the remainder of the contest and the Mount wrapped up a 90-68 victory.

Howell added four assists to his 15-point performance, while Stabach hit on 3-of-7 from three for nine of his 15 points.  Senior Kevin Milella (Floral Park, N.Y.) had 14 points, while Valdez finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds, his 10th double-double in 16 games.

NYU-Poly freshman Evan Azzam (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored a game-high 20 points for the Fighting Blue Jays.  Senior Alex Westphal (Port Washington, Wis.) also played well in defeat, posting 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Knights will put their seven-game winning streak on the line against St. Joseph's College on Saturday.  The Golden Eagles defeated the Mount, 91-87, earlier this season.  Tip time is 4:30 p.m. in the Kaplan Center, following the conclusion of the women's game which begins at 2:00 p.m.
