NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team dropped to 1-1 overall with a 4-1 loss to Albertus Magnus College in non-conference action on Saturday.
After an early 2nd minute goal by Albertus freshman Jesse Plona (Trumbull, Conn.), Mount sophomore
Brandon Mincher (Bayport, N.Y.) answered with a pretty goal in the 3rd minute. Sophomore
Sean Lockwood (Manahawkin, N.J.) played a vertical ball through the defenders to Mincher, and Mincher made a nifty move to beat the keeper one-on-one. After bouncing out to the right side, Mincher finished the play by hitting the empty net.
Unfortunately for the Knights, Albertus would answer with two more first half tallies. Senior Jamal Howard (New Haven, Conn.) headed home a feed from junior Stephen Zapata (Hamden, Conn.) in the 13th minute to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead. Zapata would set up another goal, this time in the 22nd minute to junior James Lucchesi (Norwalk, Conn.). Zapata's dangerous cross fell to Lucchesi at the far post and he finished easily.
The score would remain 3-1 in favor of the Falcons until the 75th minute. Zapata would collect his third assist of the afternoon, finding sophomore Dan Dwyer (Hamden, Conn.) on a free kick at the far post. Dwyer headed it home to make it 4-1.
Sophomore goalkeeper Donato Piroscafo (Naugatuck, Conn.) collected the win for Albertus Magnus, making five saves. Sophomore
Matt Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.) made six saves in the losing effort.
The Mount, now 1-1 overall, will be forced to make a quick turnaround. They'll travel to Vassar College for a 2:00 p.m. start on Sunday.
