Power and Pitching Propel Mount to Sage Sweep

NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Caitlin Maynes' no hitter and Sarah Johnson's grand slam in game two of a Skyline double-header against the Sage Colleges led the way to a sweep Saturday afternoon. Mount Saint Mary (12-9-1 overall, 5-3 Skyline) needed 8 innings to put Sage (8-13 overall, 4-6 Skyline) away in game one, winning with a final score of 3-2. Game two ended in six innings, with a final score of 8-0.

Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) pitched six innings of no-hit ball and struck out three en route to her eighth win of the season. The sophomore was supported by an immense hitting performance from senior Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.). After driving in Lacey Kehlenbeck (Port Jervis, N.Y.) with a single in the first inning, Johnson stepped up to the plate in the second with the bases loaded. Johnson hit Jackie Petteys' (Fort Ann, N.Y.) 3-2 pitch over the left field fence giving the Mount a 5-0 lead.

The Mount tacked on two more in the third, with freshman Chelsea Hepburn (New York, N.Y.) hitting a sacrifice fly to score Danielle Sedia (Bronx, N.Y.) and Victoria DeMarco (Hicksville, N.Y.) dropping in a double to score Christina Cruz (North Plainfield, N.J.). Johnson sealed the deal in the bottom of the sixth when her single to left plated Kehlenbeck.

Johnson finished 4-for-4 with 6 runs batted in, while Kehlenbeck was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored.

In game one, freshman Amanda Barrese (Staten Island, N.Y.) went the distance, scattering eight hits and two runs to lead the Mount to victory. After five scoreless innings, DeMarco got up with two outs and hit a homer over the left-centerfield fence giving the Mount a 1-0 lead. The lead was short-lived, however, when Hillary Faas (East Greenbush, N.Y.) singled in the top of the sixth and moved over on a ground out by Tiffany Bezio (Whiteball, N.Y.). Rachel Smith (Valatie, N.Y) hit a double, scoring Faas and tying the game at 1-1. Smith scurried to third on a wild pitch from Barrese, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Tricia Gaulin (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) to give Sage a 2-1 lead. Barrese pitched out of the jam, getting Ashley Eberle (Delmar, N.Y.) to ground out to second base.

Brittany O'Brien (Brooklyn, N.Y.) got the Mount off to an early start in the bottom of the inning by hitting a single. O'Brien moved all the way to third on an error by the third baseman and scored the tying run on a passed ball. That was the last run either team would score in regulation, putting the international tie-breaker in effect for the eighth inning.

The Mount was able to hold Sage from scoring in the top of the eighth, with Barrese picking up her third strikeout to end the inning with a runner at third. In the bottom half of the inning, DeMarco moved from second to third after Kehlenbeck's sacrifice bunt turned into an error by the first baseman. O'Brien singled up the middle, scoring DeMarco with the game-winning run.

DeMarco went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, and two runs scored in game one.

Tomorrow, the Knights are on the road to play another conference double-header against Mount Saint Vincent. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
