PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College softball team (10-7-1 overall, 3-3 Skyline) had to settle for yet another Skyline split on Sunday, this time taking one-of-two games from St. Joseph's College. The Knights won the opener, 5-0, but fell in the second game by a score of 3-0.
The Knights took an early lead in game one as junior
Lacey Kehlenbeck (Port Jervis, N.Y.) led off the game with a double to left field. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.).
Mount Saint Mary would take advantage of a two St. Joseph's errors for two more runs in the third inning. Kehlenbeck reached second on an error by the right fielder and then scored when the St. Joseph's pitcher threw away a groundball from freshman Brittany O'Brien (Brooklyn, N.Y.). O'Brien scored later in the inning on a sac fly from senior
Jackie Governale (Bethpage, N.Y.).
With Maynes still cruising in the circle, the Knights tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning. Governale doubled to left-center and then moved to third on a single by sophomore
Victoria DeMarco (Hicksville, N.Y.). DeMarco stole second and then both runners came around to score when freshman
Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.) doubled down the left field line.
Maynes scattered four hits across seven innings and struck out seven batters to earn the victory. The sophomore allowed only one runner past first base, the result of a third-inning triple from St. Joseph's sophomore Julia De Carmine (Holtsville, N.Y.).
Kehlenbeck finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, while DeMarco was 2-for-4 with one run scored. Governale batted 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI.
In game two, it was the Golden Eagles who jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Back-to-back doubles resulted in a pair of runs and it would turn out to be all that was needed.
St. Joseph's freshman Cassie Martinez (Centereach, N.Y.) yielded just three hits in seven innings of work, while striking out seven. She worked out of a first-and-third jam in the second inning with back-to-back strikeouts and the Knights would not threaten for the rest of the contest.
Kehlenbeck, Governale, and freshman
Chelsea Hepburn (New York, N.Y.) recorded the only Mount hits in game two.
Up next for the Knights is a non-conference date with RPI. A Thursday double-header is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Troy.
