BRONX, N.Y. – With 27 hits and 26 runs scored in two games, the Mount Saint Mary College softball team swept a non-conference double-header from Lehman College on Monday afternoon. The Knights (18-11) won the opener, 16-3, and game two, 10-7.
In the first game, Mount Saint Mary took control with an 11-run third inning. After back-to-back singles and a walk, freshman
Chelsea Hepburn (New York, N.Y.) hit a ground-run double that scored a pair of runs. Sophomore
Victoria DeMarco (Hicksville, N.Y.) collected an RBI with a single to left, and later in the frame, senior
Jackie Governale (Bethpage, N.Y.) drove home two runs with a single to left field. Following two more walks, Hepburn drove a base hit to center field to plate two more runs, giving her four RBIs in the inning.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Knights would add two more runs in the fifth inning. Singles by freshman
Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.) and freshman
Amanda Barrese (Staten Island, N.Y.) set the table for DeMarco. The sophomore singled again to left field, allowing both runners to score on the play.
Barrese collected the win for the Mount, allowing six hits and two earned runs over five innings. Peel finished 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI, while Hepburn was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored. DeMarco added three RBIs in a 2-for-4 performance, while Governale also finished with multiple hits (2-for-4) to go along with two runs and two RBIs.
Game two featured more offense from the Knights. Right out of the gates, senior
Lacey Kehlenbeck (Port Jervis, N.Y.) tripled and scored on a passed ball, making it 1-0 Knights. They would add four more runs in the second, getting a run-scoring single from senior
Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.) and a one-run double from Peel.
A single from freshman
Brittany O'Brien (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in the fifth inning drove in Kehlenbeck with the seventh Mount run, making it 7-2. The Knights would tack on three more runs in the seventh inning, and the insurance turned out to be much needed. Lehman rallied for five runs in the bottom half of the seventh to make the final score, 10-7.
Junior
Kerry Ulmer (Floral Park, N.Y.) earned the win for the Mount. O'Brien went 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, while Kehlenbeck was 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Johnson, Peel, and Hepburn each recorded a pair of hits in the second game.
Mount Saint Mary heads to John Jay for another non-conference double-header on Tuesday. Weather permitting, the games are scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
