VALHALLA, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College softball team completed an impressive offensive weekend with two routs of the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Sunday. The Knights (14-9-1, 7-3 Skyline) won the opener, 19-0, and the second game, 11-2.
The Mount would send 22 batters to the plate in the first inning of game one, resulting in 18 runs. Senior
Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.) laced a two-run double to left field and then came around to score on a home run from freshman
Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.). In her third at-bat of the inning, Johnson rapped a two-run triple to right-center to drive in the 17th and 18th runs of the inning.
Freshman pitcher
Amanda Barrese (Staten Island, N.Y.) earned the five-inning victory, allowing just three hits while striking out six. Johnson finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs, while Peel was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Freshman
Chelsea Hepburn (New York, N.Y.) tallied three hits in four at-bats, scored a pair of runs, and drove home two more.
The barrage continued in game two as the Knights scored one run in the second, four in the third, four in the fourth, and two in the fifth on their way to an 11-2 victory. Sophomore pitcher
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) earned the complete game win, allowing two hits and two runs with eight strikeouts.
Five Knights recorded multiple hits, including Johnson (2-for-3, two runs, RBI) and Peel (2-for-3, two runs, four RBIs). Peel drilled her second home run of the day in the second inning and also tripled to left field in the third inning. Junior
Lacey Kehlenbeck (Port Jervis, N.Y.) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Maynes was 2-for-2.
Also with multiple hits was senior
Jackie Governale (Behtpage, N.Y.), who wound up 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Her single in the fifth inning was the 128th hit of her four-year career, a new Mount Saint Mary College all-time record.
Up next for the Knights is a home date with Union College. A double-header is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Mount Airy Sports Park in New Windsor.
